Little Evil: A Fighter's Rise to the Top
by Muay Thai Guy , Team Ironlife writer/senior moderator
I was given this book as a Christmas present by a man who is a great friend and also a huge Jens Pulver fan. He decided I needed to know more about his favourite fighter and have an insight of just how much some people need to get to the top of their sport to exorcise their demons, to prove to their friends, family and mostly to themselves that they have what it takes to make something of their lives and what it takes to follow a dream!
So what exactly does make a fighter like Jens tick? what goes on inside his
mind and what drives him? What drives any fighter who has made his or her mark on the
fight sport scene?
From the very outset of the book we are presented with a gritty and grim
ordeal of a young boy who's life is at a point where he is not sure whether or not he
will make it through to adulthood. Even the front cover, a sketchy picture of an adult
Jens Pulver, shows off the bare and explicit telling of Jens's determination to live a
dream. The Foundations of a family torn apart by a father who resorts to the bottle
and violence in order to show his "affection" to his family, burning inside a young
boy to prove that he has a purpose in life and does not need to follow in the
footsteps of his father and the need to make his mother, the person who gave
everything to see her children got as much of their life as they could, proud, all
helped carve the man who is Jens Pulver, Lightweight UFC Champion.
The book gives a gripping insight into the turbulent upbringing of Jens,
Through his time working in the backyard as a young boy right through his college
years and to the present day. Jens does not hold back, he lays everything on the table
and spills his heart out as he describes what it was like growing up the way he did
and his desire to be something in this world. His dedication to wrestling and MMA are
evident in the way he writes, the hours of practicing and all the highs and lows of
his life.
Though I'm not as huge a fan of MMA as I am a fan of stand up fighting, The
book really did open my eyes to what people have to go through in life and what
lengths dedicated people will go to see their dreams succeed. As a fighter myself, I
found the book compelling and very thought provoking and even people who have no clue
about MMA or fighting will find the struggle of a boy who grew up to be a champion
inspiring to say the least.
It's one of the few books you feel compelled to read in one sitting and
definitely gets my recommendation.
