Sparring Chronicles DVD - Review
by Warsmer
The description on the DVD states: “The Sparring Chronicles takes you on a journey inside the world's toughest gyms. See how the champions train. What does it take to become a champion? How hard must your train? Sparring Chronicles gives you a fascinating insight into a fighter mentality”. This very description is ironic considering all of the training shown is very light sparing, and there is no insight to any of the fighter’s mentality; because most of the fighters do not speak at all. I was very excited when I heard of the release of this DVD considering it came from the (Bobby Razak) director of “Rites of Passage”. However, I must say I was completely let down after viewing the DVD. It did not live up to any of my hopes or expectations of what could have been a great documentary. Instead it seems as though the project was slapped together and released to make a quick buck. Let’s take a look at what each one of these 8 to 10 minute chapters had to offer:
- Mark Coleman vs. Brandon Lee Hinkle: Columbus Ohio
Light grappling in a closed door 12’X12’ room, this chapter is not too bad: Although slow, Catalfo gives a few good pointers.
- Wanderlei Silva and Rudimar Fedrigo: Curitiba, Brazil
Silva on a tennis court, on top of a building with Fedrigo at night doing some light sparing / pad work in his street clothes.
- Maurice Smith vs. Tsyoshi Kohsaka - Rings Gym, Japan
Light sparring again: Playing around and laughing most of the time.
- Nigel Hyudson vs. Justin Juuko, Los Angeles, CA
Actually not bad: This was the best chapter on the DVD. Although fully padded, both men traded well and landed good shots.
- Enson Inoue vs. Kato, Big John Calvo - Purebred Gym, Japan
Light grappling: Enson switching partners with each round.
- Chuck Liddell vs. Gilbert Yvel and Martin DeJong: Amsterdam, Holland
Liddell faces off against DeJong and then Yvel in some very light sparring, coupled with some lame video effect that swirled and twisted the image which started to give me a headache.
- Eugene Jackson vs. Tim Lacijk
Mostly take downs with some light sparring.
- Mark Coleman vs. Kevin Randleman: Columbus Ohio
Light pummeling drills, with Coleman getting the better Randleman
In conclusion am I glad I watched this video? Yes, only because I am a hardcore fan that wants to see anything and everything related to NHB / MMA. Would I ever watch this DVD again, or recommend it to anyone else? The answer is, No. I could not imagine having attended this video’s release party in LA - I think I would have been embarrassed for everyone there. Oh and one more thing, why in the hell are the Tap Out guys all over the cover of this DVD..?
