North American Grappling Association - US Nationals
by Ben Stark, Team IronLife.com Writer
The NAGA US Nationals this year were HUGE! Just to give you an idea last year the event had some 400 competitors this year they had over 400 while kids were still going!
The super fights were what everyone came to see so lets get to them:
Marcos "Parrumpinha" DaMatta (American Top Team) vs. Alan Teo (Renzo Gracie Academy)
Parrumpa was able to get an early takedown, passed the guard, and then mount. Alan grabbed a tight heel hook but Parrumpa was able to get out, and maintain top position. Alan put on a great fight and showed he was no chump against the ATT black Belt.
Pablo Poppavich (American Top Team) vs. Marcus Avellon (Freestyle Fighting Academy)
Pablo straight up dominated this match. Pablo started off pulling guard and going for a sweep, as Marcus stood Pablo followed him up and brought him up high for a nice takedown. From there Pablo got the back with hooks in but didn't finish. Pablo got mount and worked from there. Toward the end Marcus tried a couple of heel hooks and foot locks but Pablo was in little danger as he just spun his way out of all of them. Pablo won on points 12-1. Marcus was a solid competitor but Pablo showed why he is one of the most dominant grapplers in his division.
Marcel Ferreira (American Top Team) vs. Jamaal Patterson (Renzo Gracie Academy)
I was as astonished as everyone else to see Marcel get the first takedown on a 30lbs heavier Jamaal. Not to mention Jamaal pass guard of the BJJ black belt. Marcel threw a sweep in the mix to win the match 4-2.
Jeff "The Snowman"Monson(American Top Team) vs. Xandre Riberio (Ribeiro Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu)
Jeff was able to get 2 takedowns and avoid Riberio's guard to get the win.
The next North American Grappling Association event will be held the weekend of March 20 and 21 of 2004. NAGA will be hosting NAGA - World Championships in Bayone, New Jersey. For more information please check out www.nagafighter.com .
