My Thoughts on Mike Tyson
by FattyBingRips

I know.......he bit off someone's ear (actually only part of his ear, a small piece, even), and he was convicted of rape. I will agree with you that for me to stand here and try to convince you that the man should have another chance may seem ludicrous, but I am not trying to appeal to your moral beliefs but rather to your sense of fairness.

Any fight/combat sport is brutal, and sometimes it can get violent. Most sports are physically rigorous and some more so than others. Could it not be somewhat possible that the man just could not separate his personal life from his professional life?

Why is it that when Kobe Bryant was accused of rape no one believed it? I have even heard my parents say, “Kobe Bryant doesn’t have to RAPE anyone.” But Tyson DID?? When Mike Tyson was accused of the same crime under the same circumstances, everyone was pointing a finger and he was convicted before his trial. My Thoughts on Mike TysonTyson himself has said he doesn’t think Kobe will be convicted because of his “nice guy” image, and EVERYONE knows Tyson is NO NICE GUY.

In his book, BAD INTENTIONS, Peter Heller recounts an incident where Tyson was on vacation with his wife Robin Givens and “got into a fight with his wife and her friend.” Givens suffered a black eye and spent most of her vacation waiting for the bruises to clear. "Anyone with a grain of sense would know that if I punched my wife I would rip her head off. It's all lies. I have never laid a finger on her," said Tyson. Could it be that because he was already perceived as being violent to women, it was easy to believe he could be guilty of rape?

And the ear thing; now come on, we’ve heard more about Holyfield’s ear than VanGogh’s. Tyson said about the incident, “I felt Holyfield was using his head illegally. I told the referee, I wasn't getting any help, so I went back to the streets. I cannot defend it, but it happened.” Not that I’m saying it was a good thing for the sports world or for the world in general, but many public people and people in the sports world have had their transgressions forgiven. They’re talking about Pete Rose in the Baseball Hall of Fame? Come on, even the President is an admitted alcoholic and drug user.

Everybody’s got some baggage. So while I’m feeling you, that Tyson’s actions are not acceptable or are animalistic, I fail to see how those actions would keep him from fighting. Except for a few exceptions, it’s always been his personal activities that have caused people to scorn him. Do people hate him for the bite, the rape, or because they feel he is undeserving of the $112 million he raked in for losing a match?

Do we really know Mike Tyson or only what the media feeds us? Mike Tyson was born in 1966 in Brooklyn NY and was taken out of reform school at age 12 by a boxing trainer, Cus Dmato. In 1986, he became the youngest heavyweight champion in heavyweight history, he was 20 years, 144 days. He continued to wear the heavyweight crown until 1990, and was scheduled to challenge Evander Holyfied for the crown when he was indicted on rape charges, which resulted in him being incarcerated.

Tyson was held in an Indiana penitentiary until March 1995. After his release from prison he began training and fought in some obscure fights but his aim was always to face Evander Holyfield. These subsequent matches have not ended with Tyson the champion and that frustration is evident in his reactions at the matches, thus the ear biting incident. Mike Tyson has been fighting all his life, yet the same commissions and regulatory associations that made millions from his fights have banned him from fighting. The NSAC (Nevada State Athletic Commission) held Tyson’s purse after the Holyfield fight, and their ruling banned Tyson from fighting for at least one year.

While the NSAC banned Tyson, other state athletic commissions wanted the long awaited Tyson vs. Lewis fight to be seen through. Lewis and Tyson were set to fight in Memphis, Tennessee, and the press went to Tyson in Hawaii to get a few releases and interviews. About the accusation of biting Lewis in the press conference, Tyson said, "I said I bit Lennox because that is what everyone wanted to hear. I will say anything to get under his skin," the statement said. "But on June 8, flesh will not be enough. I will take Lennox's title, his soul and smear his pompous brains all over the ring when I hit him."

Tyson and Lewis fought in a fully sanctioned fight in Las Vegas, with the outcome seeing Tyson knocked out from a massive Lewis right hand.

Dr. Joyce Brothers, a noted psychologist does not believe Tyson is harmful. She said in an interview with the National Enquirer, “he’s trying to draw attention to himself in a misguided bid to recapture the recognition he had when he was IRON MIKE the champion......He’s no psychopath, He’s not going to rape anybody, He just wants publicity.” She goes on to say to “provide Mike with therapy to curb his aggressiveness, you sacrifice the emotion that made him so intimidating as a boxer.” That is Mike, he is aggressive and intimidating, that’s what boxers are!!

(This was given to a public speaking class at college, where I previously gave a speech recognizing Ernesto Hoost's achievements, and this is the conclusion alluding to that speech)

Conclusion: If you remember the speech I gave earlier in the semester about the 4 time kickboxing champion, then you will be surprised when I tell you that the same organization that Ernesto Hoost triumphed over with an unprecedented 4 World Grand Prix Tournament Championships, has signed a contract with Iron Mike. I am not here today to plead Tyson’s case as a human being. He is not a role model, he is not anyone’s hero, he is not even a nice person, HE IS A FIGHTER. So I just say to you again: Give him a chance and LET MIKE FIGHT!!
