- A lot of our readers have problems with their knees from years of training. What are your recommendations for assessing knee problems, and what are your recommendations for athletes that want to strengthen and prevent injuries to their knees, or fix old injuries?
There are a wide range of different injuries that can occur to the knee. I would recommend a physician should probably look at it and give his or her recommendation. That does not mean I will agree with the assessment but it is a good starting point. In most cases we train the knee in a progressive manner with a variety of movements depending on the injury. I use backward sled pulling a great deal especially with ACL problems. I also use a complex with the jump stretch bands. Keep in mind this varies with each individual.

- Obviously we deal with a lot of shoulder injuries. What are your recommendations in that area?
I found O lifts performed correctly are great to strengthen the shoulder capsule as well as the other benefits offered with the O lifts. Kbs, Cbs and Steel sledge training are also great for enhancing strength and range of motion in the shoulder capsule.

Words of advice work on range of motion in the shoulder capsule and do not live on a bench press.

- In your opinion, what are your greatest accomplishments to date?
My son Reece is by far my greatest accomplishment.

- When first assessing a client, what methods do you use in order to prioritize their training and to assess prior injuries and weak points?
I administer a questionnaire. I usually have them perform various hurdle hip mobility drills as well as other movements that stress range of motion. Maybe an inverted L drill, standing broad jump, some type of work capacity test. These tests are completely variable depending on the individual and how much I personally know about this person. For example I watch some athletes participate in their sport and I watch their movement’s patterns and I do not need to test them because I already know their weaknesses.

- Can you please list your recommendations of books that all athletes should be reading?
Supertraining – Mel Siff
Facts and Fallacies of Fitness- Mel Siff
Renegade Training For Football- John Davies
Renegade Training for Extreme Sports- John Davies
High Performance Sports Conditioning- Bill Foran
MaxCondition For Sports Performance- Jamie Hale
Science and Practice of Strength Training- Vladimir Zatsiorsky

- What is your favorite TV show?
Anything that deals with boxing. Any show featured on the Spanish channel with the hot reporters.

- Favorite Website?
www.renegadetraining.com
www.torqueathletic.com
www.medline.com

- Favorite food?
Steak and beef ribs.

- Dogs or cats, which do you, prefer and what, if any, do you have?
Generally speaking dogs. I have (really it is my son’s) a dog-named Marco. He is an Akita – German Shepherd mix.

- What is a typical day like for you?
I get up do some non-weighted Gpp work. Begin training clients and answering emails early in the morning. About midday I usually do some type of training. Later that evening I conduct numerous classes that address full spectrum athleticism. I also work with boxers a great deal in the evening. I also prepare the info that I have put together for any camps or seminars I have coming up. I write and read articles through out the day.

I might practice new skills I am learning 3-4 times during the day.

- If you were not strength coaching, what would you be doing?
I have no idea. It is my life and the one thing I have found that I am pretty good at.
