- I see that you were a competitive bodybuilder. What were the events leading up to that and do you see yourself competing again in the future?
I went through a couple of years where all I cared about was physique development, however my athleticism suffered greatly. I have had the privilege of working with and consulting with some of the field's leading authorities such as John Davies, Scott Sonnon, Mel Siff, etc.. I currently spend 30 hrs per week studying and researching various aspects of the sports conditioning field. I worked with Dr. David Pursley (Hall of Fame Coach and Olympic Weightlifter) in regards to Olympic Weightlifting. I have basically built my career on seeking out the knowledgeable successful coaches and taking their advice as well as forming my own techniques and methods from my observations and experiences.

My advice for aspiring coaches is to seek out the coaches and leaders you respect and listen to what they have to say. Also experiment with new things constantly and surround yourself with people who have similar interests. In my new book MaxCondition for Sports Performance this topic is covered in detail as I dedicate a chapter to this topic.

- Where can we pick up a copy of MaxCondition for Sports Performance, and what other books do you have out?
The publisher of the book is Rmax.tv and they will also sell the book. Other sources include maxcondition.com, torqueathletic.com, and I am sure that other sources will sell the book as well. This book is very in depth as it has over 400 photos and a vast amount of scientific info as well. The book is great for anyone interested in full spectrum conditioning. This book is all about providing the tools and knowledge necessary to become a better coach, athlete, or general fitness enthusiast.

- You also have a new product out called the Steel Sledge, available at Torqeathletic.com. Can you tell our readers why you developed this product, what are its uses, and what other products do you have out or are developing?
Sledge training has existed for hundreds of years, but until recently if fell out of the limelight due to the “cosmetic quack” commercial gym industry. All I can say is that I am very excited about this product and it has proven golden for numerous trainees I have worked with. I use the product with everyone from general fitness enthusiasts to pro boxers. It definitely offers something for everyone.

Sledge training offers the following benefits:

  • Rotational Strength and Power
  • Core strength
  • Increased dynamic range of motion
  • Coordination
  • Learn to transmit force from the ground up through the arms (key quality in most sports)
  • Enhanced work capacity
  • Mental toughness
  • Restoration
  • Wrist and forearm strength
  • Multi-planar movement patterns
  • Selective tension (learning when to tense and relax muscles)

- Why The Steel Sledge?
Finally, a hammer that the head won't fly off. The Steel Sledge comes in two types of designs, steel sledge design (20&30lb) and the urethane head design (20lb).
  • 3 inch steel mass head with flat machine bottom for ease of parking after use.
  • Handle is 11-gauge steel, 1.5-inch diameter (great for grip)
  • Entire hammer has a military crinkle black finish for grip durability and a look unparalleled.
  • Handle has 3/16 inch steel cap slug welded to it for grip location during intense workouts.
  • Easy on the hands.
  • Urethane head Sledge designed to reduce impact shock during striking contact.
  • Urethane head Sledge molded after original pounding mallets of days gone by.
  • Generally speaking a 12-16 lb sledge is about as heavy as you will find.
  • With the Steel Sledge we offer a 20 and 30lb sledge.
  • Steel sledge offers a commercial friendly appearance.

- Other than coaching do you have any other business ventures that you are working on at the moment?
I am the co-promoter of the Kentucky Fighting Challenge (mixed martial arts event). The next event will be held Jan. 24 2004. I am also helping Randy Lovell promote a Fitness and Wellness Expo Jan 16, 17, 18 at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky. We already have some big names coming in that will be displayed at the event. We hope to make this thing as large as the Arnold Classic Expo. Anyone interested in a vendor space can contact Randy Lovell at randy@wow-expo.com. I am also conducting MaxCondition for Sports Performance training camps around the world. I am scheduled to appear in South Africa in March of 2004.

- What are your views on steroid use in the industry? Do you think they will ever go away, or do you think they are necessary for our athletes to have the size, strength, and longevity in the sport?
They have been around for a long time and will probably be here for a while. No, I do not think they are necessary. You must understand anabolic steroids are only one of the many drugs that are rampant in bodybuilding. The other drugs include growth hormone, thyroid hormone, insulin, etc.

Jamie Hale & Shane Hamman, Olympic Weight Lifter

- Have you had the chance to work with any elite athletes? What do you find is the biggest challenge when training someone at their level?
Yes, I have worked with elite athletes, and they have various personalities just as lower level athletes. One of the problems you face with many of these athletes is their reliance on their skill coach also serving as their conditioning coach. These are two different fields and they should be treated that way. The skill coach and the conditioning coach need to realize their role in order to maximize the athletes potential.

- Who are the coaches that you recommend our readers look into?
Some of my favorite coaches are John Davies, Scott Sonnon, Pavel, Mike Mahler and Dan Fichter.

That’s it for part one. Look for more questions and answers from Coach Hale in the next issue of Ironlife.
