Carter Williams Interview
by Muay Thai Guy, Moderator @ IronLife.com
Ironlife.com- When did you first get involved with the martial arts? Could you please give us a brief history of your training?
Carter Williams: Been fighting in the streets for as long as I can remember, when I was in junior high school in San Jose I was in wrestling and went to state championships but was involved in gangs so street fighting was more of a concern.
My family moved to Modesto to try to get away from that and when I got into high school things didn't change much and I still got involved in gangs and stuff until one day I was fighting these 4 gang members in a park next to the school I was going to, when my coach Gene Fields who was working at the school I was going to as a supervisor, came upon the fight and I had knocked the 4 guys out ...QUICK! Maybe 2 shots each .
He said he was surprised and wouldn't have believed it if he hadn't seen it himself.
He asked me if I would be interested in putting my talents to good use and that I could make money someday, not jail time.
So that was about 8 yrs ago and I have been living with them while training with Mr. Fields and his wife, my other coach "CAT" fields at there home. Then when I’m off, I get to go home to my girl and 2 kids (daughter and son).
It must have been destiny that brought us together because were a team and always will be a team. He and his wife have been my father and mother in my personal life through thick and thin and in the worst of times.
Mr. Fields has trained me in Kang Duk Won (Korean style combat karate) as well as Muay Thai , boxing, judo and aiki-jujitsu.
Ironlife.com - I've noticed you have some pretty unorthodox training routines which involve pulling cars with your gloves on. Can you go through a typical days training routine and how would that and your diet change when you are approaching fights?
Carter Williams: My regular training routine runs 5 days a week at 3-6hrs broken up in segments. I don't go into to0 much detail on our training routine because my coach doesn't allow me to give away trade secrets.
But before a fight the intensity level goes up 100% and heavy training is 7-8 weeks prior, working to max out and then stabilize 3-5 days before.
With our routine I nave never sustained a major injury in the entire 8 yrs I've been with Mr. Fields, yet he makes me go to levels I never thought I could achieve.
Ironlife.com - What do you feel about the current controversies surrounding K-1 at the moment and the crossovers between the kickboxing and boxing world? How do you feel the emergence of Tyson, Butterbean, et al will effect the future of K-1?
Carter Williams: The talk about K-1 and boxers emerging together is for the people and that is what K-1 is all about "Entertaining the masses".
The effect of Tyson and Butterbean on the future I hope will be a positive one. K-1 doesn't make designs on a whim, there must have been some heavy thought behind it.
I hope it works out for everybody, of course everybody has the right to their own opinion.
Ironlife.com - So how would you feel about going up against Tyson? How do you think you'd fare?
Carter Williams: It has been mentioned and the thought of fighting Mike Tyson is the most exciting thing that could happen to me in the world next to K-1 now! What an honor it would be to meet him in the ring one on one.
He was very cool in Las Vegas where we met at the last K-1,we had a great time and he was totally gracious and humble.
As far as how I would do against him in K-1 rules......only the ring will tell, let's go NOW!
Ironlife.com - Your record so far has you with 11 wins and 1 loss and you've beaten some tough opponents including McDonald, Fujimoto and Big Diesel Jeff Ford, who would you say was your hardest opponent to date and why?
Carter Williams: They're all hard, nobody was easy.
Nobody will be easy! I never underestimate my opponent.
Ironlife.com - There seemed to be a lot of controversy regarding the decision against McDonald and the fact that you only had to qualify once while Mcdonald had to qualify twice. What would you have to say to your critics?
Carter Williams: I don't make the rules in K-1, they change the format, I adapt. That's my job so I really don't have any comment on that.
Ironlife.com - McDonald recently told Ironlife Magazine while he felt more powerful than you, he believes you had the upper hand in the fight because he felt he was out of shape. How would you respond to that and do you feel a rematch is in the cards?
Carter Williams: Mcdonald said he was out of shape when I beat him...well that speaks for itself. Yes I had the upper hand, he makes it sound like a bad thing! For him maybe.
I was ready, he wasn't. I'll rematch anybody who wants a fight.
Ironlife.com - Your opponent in Osaka has been named as Ray Sefo of New Zealand and Ray's been a veteran of the K-1 circuit for some time now. Do you feel this will be your toughest fight to date and how are you feeling about this fight?
Carter Williams: Yes, I would say Ray will be my toughest fight him being a seasoned veteran of K-1 but this is how I prove myself by fighting better and better opponents.
I feel great about this fight, it's my dream to finally meet my idols and meet them face to face in the ring. I have faith that my training and my heart will carry through.
Ironlife.com - What are your short term goals and long term goals?
Carter Williams: It's hard to say but my long term goals are to win, to become world champ and help others achieve their goals like I did.
Short term.......Life is a goal in itself these days, just staying alive is tough enough on the streets.
Ironlife.com - Thank you for taking the time to answer the questions. I would at this point like to wish you all the best in your fight in Japan and for your future professional career. Do you have anything in closing you would like to say to Ironlife readers and Carter Williams fans?
Carter Williams: To my fans and supporters....thanks, besides my coaches this is the first time people are behind me in what I do, good or bad you have to play the cards that are dealt and I believe I have a flush.
I will always work hard , like my coach says "What we do in life, goes down in eternity".
Thank you for interviewing me.
