How to set up your hard drive against malicious code

Software needed:
Partition Magic 8 & Drive Image
Ill first explain how the majority of malicious code is written to infect your b0x. You will find that these programs are written to infect the C:\ drive or to infect the %:\ (% is the default drive) or they are written to infect the C:\Windows or %:\Windows directory. The fix comes in using partition magic. With partition magic you can take your one hard drive and split it into multiple drives. This can be done without loosing any pre-existing information on your drives. By splitting your drive into multiple you are allotted the chance to set up a dummy drive for infection.
For our purposes we will split the drive into 2 drives. The sizes we will go with are to make the C:\ drive no more than 4-5 gigs. Reason being is that on this drive you only need to have the bare necessities of what are required by your operating system and your security files such as anti-virus, firewalls, memory recovery, office software and so on. Only put on this drive the programs you will always need to have, not the ones you want. Also change the drive letter to anything other than a: b: c: by doing this you will rid yourself of the chance of a malicious code from infecting your drive by the standard c:\. The reason not to use the letters a: b: is that those usually refer to floppy drives. After you have done this I suggest that you make a copy of the windows directory and paste it to your second drive. Reasoning behind this is that you will only download and install any new programs or web content to this second drive and that the standard %:\windows infection method will only infect the dummy windows directory and not do any damage to your operating system. Now we come to the program drive image. Use this program to make a smart sector copy of your drive that was formally labeled c:\ after you have set up the drive to hold the necessities and gotten rid of the junk files on it. Make sure it is clean, and rid of anything you don't want on there. Using drive image you will make an image of the drive. This is useful for recovery methods, copy the image to a CD and leave a copy of it on your second drive. The benefit of leaving a copy in two places is that you will be able to easily have access to recovery. If you ever need to clean your whole drive you will have an easy recovery method with the cd, also if the cd becomes damaged or lost you still have a copy on your other drive. If for any reason you become infected you will only have to wipe the second drive that you have created since you will only download and install programs or web content to that drive and not your operating system drive. For full system cleans you are able to wipe both of the drives (preferable with DOD specs or Gutmann method) and still sleep well at night. Just make sure you don't pt anything that may bite you in the ass on the image file. For all purposes I suggest that you start clean and use active kill disk to clean your drive or anything that will use the DOD or Gutmann methods of data destruction.
There you have it. Easy and simple method for personal PC security against malicious coders of the net. As well as a good way to keep your system clean of anything that you don't want others to know about.
