Hardcore Fighting Championships II
by seaBASS and BADrew, Team IronLife.com Writers
Wonderland Ballroom, Club Lido, Revere MA 10-18-2003
Joe Maffei, founder and promoter of Hardcore Fighting Championships put on another exciting show for the Greater Boston Area MMA fans. It was an exciting scene at the event held at the Wonderland race track in Revere, MA. The combination of cold beer, live fights and the girls of event sponsor Coyote Ugly made for an enjoyable atmosphere for all. The six fight card (three amateur/three pro) have been altered from the schedule but the action, in save the main event, left nothing to be desired. Joe Maffei welcomed us as friends and granted us All-Access, including weigh-ins and a complimentary dinner with the fighters. The MA Commission also granted us the opportunity to sit ringside for photos(no flash) and observation. MA Commission rules for NHB follows that of UFC with the exception of a cage and elbow strikes, as they are currently outlawed. Maffei's primary goal for amateur/pro events is to 'groom the amateurs to a professional level'. All in all it was a great night for BADrew and seaBass to be sitting ringside taking in the fights.
Amateur Heavy Weight
Lance Everson, Foxboro (MA) vs. Craig Marving, Rochester (NY) by BADrew
In an impressive showing from Everson in this amateur heavyweight bout, he landed a right hand on Marving that dropped him at about the 30 second mark. Lance following up with a furious attack to his opponent's midsection, which prompted the referee to waive the contest off at the 55 second mark of the first round.
Amateur Light Weight
Joe Lauzon, Taunton (MA) vs. Giasis Calvacanti, Coconut Creek (FL) by seaBASS
The next amateur fight on the card was a light weight match up between local Lauzon and Floridian, Calvacanti. Lauzon came out of the corner fired up and immediately shot for a double leg resulting in a powerful slam to the canvas. Calvacanti reversed guard to establish a north-south position and unleashed heavy strikes to an unprotected Lauzon. Calvacanti upheld the GnP until the bell rang to end round 1. Calvacanti, being the fresher fighter moved in for a shoot and slam maintaining control of the full 2nd round with various submission attempts coupled with strikes from the mount. An impressive Calvacanti defeated Lauzon via unanimous decision.
Amateur Welter Weight
Mike Brown, Portland (ME) vs. Renat Mirzbekova, New York City (NY) by BADrew
The interesting clash of style between the grappler Brown and the striker Mirzbekova resulted in immediate action as the NYC native came out with a roundhouse kick to Brown’s head. Calmly ducking out of the way, Brown countered with a takedown, and patiently positioned himself for the ankle lock that caused Mirzbekova to tap out at 2:38 of the first round. "I heard he was a TaeKwondo Champion, " remarked Brown, "My plan was to stay calm and take him to the ground."
Professional Welter Weight
Thiago 'The Pitbull' Alves, Coconut Creek (FL) vs. Markus 'The Irish Grenade' Davis, Bangor (ME) by seaBASS
The most exciting and brutal fight of the night. These warriors blasted out of their respective corners ready for a war. Davis out of Team Miletich and Alves out of American Top Team both exercising tremendous stand-up technique. Round 1 consisted of Davis the busier of the two throwing more leather with great defense by Alves. In and out of the clinch, Alves started to trade with the ex-pro boxer Davis as blood started to flow out of both fighters. Davis slipped and Alves capitalized engaging in a GnP to end round 1. Round 2 showed to be just as exciting with Davis coming out looking for a KO, but Alves was ready, answering with a big left counter as well as solid leg kicks. Both warriors traded heavily until a brutal high-kick to the mouth of Davis sent him to the canvas, momentarily dazed. Round 2 ended with Alves seizing the downed Davis and establishing a vicious GnP to end round 2, just shy of a TKO. Round 3 began with Alves throwing hard leg kicks to the more tired, Davis. A clinch ensued with Davis falling to the canvas and Alves attempting a guillotine choke. Davis, defended as Alves could not sink his hooks. This was the end of this incredible all out battle of the welterweights. It was Alves' night by a split decision.
Professional Middle Weight
Jorge Santiago, Coconut Creek (FL) vs. LeVern Clark, Rockville (IL) by BADrew
In another grappler/striker clash, Santiago handled UFC vet Clark with relative ease. After a short period of feeling each other out with side and leg kicks, Santiago shot into Clark for a takedown, tapping him out with a triangle choke just 2:32 into the first stanza.
Professional Heavy Weight
Jon Ivey, Houston (TX) vs. John Dixon, Biloxi (MS) by seaBASS
In the most lack-luster, unimpressive fight of the night, both heavy weights squared off as the crowd grew silent with anticipation. The entire fight was dominated by Dixon whom had the upper hand on the feet and ground, with Ivey not landing one strike or takedown. Round 1 started with Ivey shooting in for a takedown attempt and falling to the canvas by way of Dixon's sprawl. Ivey ended up in the guard with Dixon landing shots in GnP fashion. The round ended with a reversal and Dixon in the guard position with an attempted heel hook by Ivey. Round 2 was as drab as round 1 with Ivey faking a big right and attempting feeble double leg takedowns, to no avail as Dixon sprawled every time. Ivey, extremely exhausted, eventually fell to the canvas on his own as Dixon capitalized ending the round, GnP style from the side mount. It was not Ivey's night and Dixon won by unanimous decision.
Many, many thanks to Joe Maffei for making this review for IronLife possible. We look forward to working with Joe in the future.
Look for Hardcore Fighting 3 scheduled for March 28th, 2004 with a return of Dan 'The Beast' Severn.
