On Saturday, March 26th, we headed on down to Rosarito beach in Baja Mexico for the second installment of the Crown Fighting Championship promoted by Tony Perez (who also promotes Reto Maximo). This event was part of a Spring Break extravaganza that was in full effect when we got to the event. As we pulled up, we saw a huge crowd gathered outside the venue around, as it turned out to be, a radio station DJ spinning his tunes.
As we walked into the outdoor venue, we could see another crowd gathered around a stage where a Vanity 6 type singer had the crowd mesmerized…and we mean mesmerized. Her performance was then followed up by the Kottonmouth Kings, kind of a rock, metal, hip-hop performance that had the crowd literally hopping.
As we made our way to our stations, we saw in attendance such notables as PRIDE Fighters Dean Lister and Chris Brennan plus Brazilian Top Team member Aloisio Ferreire along with the referee for the night, Larry “The Landlord” Landless.
As the Kottonmouth Kings finished up their set, the beautiful ring girls entered the ring to the delight of the crowd and the fighters made their way to the ring for the opening bout.
Fight 1 - Joel Luis vs. Cesar Vazquez

The first fight of the night saw Team De Fiant’s Joel Luis (1-0) go up against Fightworx’ Cesar Vazquez (0-0). Dean Lister was in Luis’s corner. The fight started with both fighters touching gloves in the center of the ring - Vazquez then shot in and tied-up Luis with a bear hug against the ropes - Vazquez turned his body and brought down Luis to the ground where both rolled twice before Vazquez landed into Luis’s full guard - From there, Luis tried to get a triangle choke but Vazquez pulled out - Vazquez then went back into Luis’s full guard - Vazquez threw a few punches but Luis did a good job at tying up Vazquez’s arms - Luis then tried to go for another triangle choke but Vazquez stood up and was looking to pick up and slam Luis, but Luis grabbed the left leg to prevent the slam - Vazquez immediately started to punch Luis in the face with some pretty good lefts before Luis was able to tie-up the arm - Vazquez then dropped his left knee onto Luis’s face and tried to drop a few more knees before Luis was able to sink in the triangle and get the submission - A cool little side note: Dean Lister quickly came into the ring after the fight was over and helped Vazquez up and congratulated him on a good fight. Joel Luis wins by submission (triangle choke) at 1:32 of the first round over Cesar Vazquez.
Fight 2 - Lonnie Wright vs. Leonard Kyle

The second fight of the night saw Chris Brennan’s Next Generation fighter Lonnie Wright (2-0) go up against Assassin MMA’s Leonard Kyle (0-0). The fight started off by both fighters touching gloves in the center of the ring - Kyle came out and throws a left jab but at the same time, Wright throws a left front kick that stops Kyle dead in his tracks - Both fighters show some movement before Wright faints with a left low Thai kick - Wright then throws a left front kick which was blocked by Kyle who immediately counters with a left and a right followed by another right which were all blocked by Wright as he stepped back - As Kyle came in with the last right, Wright picked up Kyle and slammed him to the mat - Wright then started to throw some good body and head shots while in Kyle’s full guard - Wright decided to stand-up and as he did, he picked up Kyle who wasn’t about to give up the full guard - Wright made him pay for that by landing some pretty good head shots - Kyle then went back down to the mat and Wright went back to punishing the body with some solid body blows - Wright then stood up again, but this time, Kyle grabbed Wright’s left leg and kicked out, forcing Wright to lose his balance and fall back - Kyle quickly got to his feet and jumped on Wright, landing in his full guard - From there, Wright was able to tie-up Kyle pretty good until he was able to position himself for a triangle choke - As Kyle fought the choke, Wright started to punch with his left hand which left Kyle no choice but to tap. Lonnie Wright wins by submission (triangle choke\strikes) at 2:33 of the first round over Leonard Kyle.
Fight 3 - Manuel Villegas vs. Billy “Kill Bill” Seal

The third fight of the night saw the debut of Freestyle Fighting Inc.’s Billy “Kill Bill” Seal against Lozano’s Vale Tudo Manuel Villegas (0-1). Seal entered the ring and jumped onto the ropes to the delight of the fans. One ring girl took it upon herself to spank Seal a few times (in fun) as he was standing on the ropes. The fight began with both fighters touching gloves – they then started to circle each other - Villegas tries a left high kick but Seal steps back and was in no danger of the kick landing - Villegas then throws a left hook that appears to land which is simultaneously countered by Seal with a looping right haymaker that misses - Seal comes back with a right hook that misses as Villegas moves in and takes Seal down - Seal lands in full guard as Villegas stands up and starts to throw punches but Seal defends well and starts kicking up - Villegas grabs the legs and throws them to the ground as he almost lands in side-mount but Seal quickly tries to get up with his arm around Villegas’s head - Villegas pushes Seal down and Villegas ends up in full mount - Villegas tries to reign down punches but Seal ties his arms up very well and sits up – Seal reverses Villegas and lands in Villegas’s full-guard - They stall there for a bit before Seal unleashes some rights to the head of Villegas – a few land, a few are blocked - Seal then stands and moves back - hey both stand, touch gloves, and back to action - Seal throws a low right kick that hits Villegas on the shoulder as he was ducking - Seal then follows up the kick with a wild right haymaker that misses - Villegas comes back with left hook that misses, followed by a right front kick that misses - Seal counters with a wild right that is partially blocked by Villegas as they clinch on the ropes - Villegas then throws a knee that lands on the hip of Seal - Villegas tried to grab and throw Seal to the ground by turning right but his grip slipped, and he falls backward and Seal ended up in full-mount - From there, Seal did some ground-and-pound until the towel came flying in. Seal, happy about his win, does a back flip from the middle rope. Billy Seal wins by TKO (towel) at 2:13 of the first round over Manuel Villegas.
Fight 4 - Tony Garcia vs. Mike Corey

The fourth fight of the night featured Chris Brennan’s Next Generation fighter Mike Corey (0-0) against Beverly Hills Jiu-Jitsu\ Chute Boxe USA fighter Tony Garcia (1-2). Both touch gloves and faint punches and kicks until Garcia lands a right Thai kick to the thigh of Corey - They measure each other and Garcia looks to kick with his left leg when Corey shoots in and takes Garcia down - Corey ends up in half-guard with his legs wrapped around Garcia’s right leg and Garcia’s left arm around Corey’s neck - Corey works out and goes to side-mount - Corey throws an elbow and a knee to Garcia’s body - Corey continues to attack Garcia’s body with elbows, knees and punches. Corey then works to the north\south position and rotates around to try to get the full mount - Garcia has Corey’s left leg trapped as he tries to escape - Corey frees his left leg and Garcia rolls to his right and gives Corey his back – Corey is able to sink in the hooks and stretch Garcia out - Corey starts to punch Garcia on the head and on his back but Garcia is able to turn onto his back and Corey goes for side-mount - Corey is able to trap Garcia’s head, left arm and shoulder with what looked like a mata-leon - Corey then starts peppering Garcia’s head with rights which caused Garcia to tap. Mike Corey wins by submission at 2:20 of the first round over Tony Garcia.
Fight 5 - Tim Carey vs. ?

Unfortunately, American Freestyle Fighting’s Tim Carey came all the way down from Arizona only to have his opponent no show. He was awarded the victory.
Fight 6 - Hector Figueroa vs. Chuck Costello

Going onto fight six, American Freestyle Fighting’s Chuck Costello (0-0) faced Academia Defensa Total’s Hector Figueroa (3-4). Figueroa came in wearing a full gi. Both touch gloves in the center of the ring - Each fighter faints a punch or kick, trying to figure the other out - Costello finally throws a right low kick to the thigh of Figueroa who immediately counters with a right that grazes the top of Costello’s head – Costello throws his own right that lands on Figueroa’s left shoulder - Costello then takes a step back as Figueroa comes forward and tries to land a knee to the mid-section but falls short of contact - At this point, both fighters tie up against the ropes until Figueroa gains some leverage on Costello and from our vantage point, looks like he just drops his weight on Costello - They get hung up on the second rope for a bit before they hit the mat with Figueroa in half guard - Figueroa just smothers Costello as he tries to go for a key lock - Figueroa is then able to get the full mount as Costello tries to counter with a few shots to the body of Figueroa - Figueroa, still smothering Costello, sits up enough to throw some short elbows - Figueroa then goes into ground-and-pound mode until Costello taps. Hector Figueroa wins by submission (strikes from the mount) at 1:17 of the first round over Chuck Costello.
Intermission

We then had the intermission which saw Chris Brennan step into the ring with a box full of goodies from his No-Gi Industries clothing company. He opened up the box and Chris and his team members started to throw hats and shirts and stuff out to the audience who went crazy. Everyone loves the freebies!! It was a tremendous hit with all in attendance. Also giving out freebies was FightDVDs.com who threw out a lot of DVDs to the audience. Again, the audience loved it. Big props to Brennan, No-Gi Industries and FightDVDs.com for their generosity. While the freebies were unexpected, it was the icing on the cake and we still had the main event to go.
Fight 7 - Mike Seal vs. Josh Tamsen

And then it was time - MMA Team Mexico’s Mike Seal (6-7-1), who had just fought the night before in Los Angeles and was sporting a black eye, stepped into the ring with Tangaloo Team’s Josh Tamsen (6-4). The fight started with Mike coming out and throwing a right high kick that Tamsen backed away from - Tamsen then jumped into the air looking like he was going to try a right kick when Seal came in with a flying knee that connected on Tamsen’s body - Seal followed the flying knee with a Muay Thai clinch and a couple of knees to the mid-section - Tamsen tried to get Seal to the ground but Seal just kept his balance and circled Tamsen and came back with another knee that sent Tamsen backwards to the ropes - Seal came in with a right high kick but Tamsen ducked and narrowly avoided the kick - They maneuvered a bit before Seal came in with another right high kick that Tamsen just ducked under - Seal followed with a low right kick that landed on Tamsen’s hip but Tamsen is finally able to take Seal down - Seal is now in full guard - They both throw a few short punches as Tamsen tries to maneuver to side mount to no avail - Tamsen then starts to work the body as Seal works the guard - No real action results in the ref standing the fighters up - Seal comes in with a left hook that Tamsen ducks under - They go back to maneuvering a bit, then Seal comes in with what Tamsen thought was going to be a right high kick so Tamsen ducks and runs straight into Seal’s right low kick that hits Tamsen right in the chest - You could hear the impact in the back row - Tamsen goes to one knee and turns his head away from Seal - Seal goes over and it appears that he is about to nail Tamsen with another right low kick, but decides not to pull the trigger on his downed opponent - Seal now has his right hand on Tamsen’s head and his left hand on Tamsen’s right shoulder as Tamsen tries to stand - Seal backs off and Tamsen gets back up to his feet but not looking so good - Seal comes in with a straight right kick that Tamsen tries to duck under – the kick hits Tamsen’s face and brushes his left shoulder - Tamsen goes back and falls down as Seal swarms in on top of him - Seal throws a right to Tamsen’s head as Tamsen is on his knees doubled over - Seal then puts his left hand on Tamsen’s head waiting to see if that would be all for Tamsen - But Tamsen scurries along the mat on his hands and knees trying to find a way to his feet - Seal then hits him with a few more rights before he unleashes a right kick to the body that lands flush on Tamsen’s side - Tamsen scurries to the corner where Seal throws a left kick, then a right stomp – as Seal picks up his leg for the stomp, Tamsen reaches over and grabs Seal’s left leg and brings him down to his knees - Seal is now on top of Tamsen who is on his knees, doubled over (like in a re-start in wrestling) - Seal throws a few lefts to the head and then lands a good right knee to Tamsen’s body - They stay in that position for a bit before Seal starts to spank, literally spank Tamsen ala Couture \ Ortiz - Tamsen tries to roll to his right but to no avail - Seal wasn’t going anywhere - Seal threw a few more punches and elbows before being stood back up - Tamsen remained on his knees as Larry Landless moved in to check on Tamsen - Tamsen made his way back to his feet and the fight was restarted - Seal came in with a straight right that landed, followed by a left hook that sent Tamsen down - the ref jumped in and stopped the fight. Mike Seal wins by first round TKO over Josh Tamsen.
MMA is alive and well in Mexico. Tony Perez is seeing to that. The second installment of the Crown Fighting Championship didn’t disappoint. All the fighters did themselves proud and demonstrated great sportsmanship to the credit of their schools. With great fights, beautiful ring girls, No-Gi Industries freebies, FightDVDs.com freebies, and live bands - as we heard someone in the audience say – this is one hell of a spring break!!! We definitely look forward to covering the next Tony Perez event, which at this time, is tentative for late April, possibly May. TheFightGame.tv would like to thank Mr. Perez, his associate Mr. Corona, and the entire CFC staff for their great hospitality.
