The Importance of Arginine
by preist943, Senior Mod @ www.IronLife.com & IronLife.com Staff Writer
Open any magazine and you will see a ton of adds for the latest supplements to pack on size and strength. As of late at the top of the list are these new nitric oxide enhancers.
Lets not forget arginine is nothing new. There have been 1000’s of studies on it’s many uses. Arginine is found in high concentration in connective tissues; since it is a component of collagen; it also plays a critical role in new tissue growth and bone cells.
Arginine is now being studied to treat cancer. It was found to retard tumor growth by enhancing the immune system. Arginine was found to increase the size of the thymus gland and increase T-cell production. Large doses of arginine can lower polyamines; which are present in various cancers in elevated levels.
Now this was a study done with lab rats; but still promising results.
Arginine also helps in liver detoxification.
Arginine (in some cases) increased sperm cells as much as 35% when taken at 4g daily.
We all know that arginine effects gh release. A study at the Division of Endocrinology at the University of Turin involving normal adults aged 66-82 tripled the level of HGH in their blood after administration of 30-gram injections of arginine.
Here is another note worthy study.
Am J Cardiol; 2004 Apr. 1,93(7): 933-5. Thirteen hypertensive patients with Microvascular Angina were studied before and after receiving oral L-arginine (4 weeks, 2 g, 3 times daily). L-arginine significantly improved angina class; systolic blood pressure at rest; and quality of life. Maximal forearm blood flow, plasma L-arginine, : asymmetric Dimethyl arginine ratio, and cyclic guanylate Monophosphate increased significantly after treatment. In medically treated hypertensive patients with microvascular angina, oral L-arginine may represent a useful therapeutic option.
L-arginine has long been used following trauma and during sepsis. Studies have shown that L-arginine improves nitrogen balance and thus reduces protein catabolism. Animal studies have shown that L-arginine can be of significant benefit after severe burn injury; increasing survival; improving cardiac function and preventing bacterial translocation. Intravenous L-arginine has been helpful in some human traumas and helping to speed healing while inhibiting post-injury wasting and weight loss.
Arginine also has a impact on cortisol, and should be used post workout with glutamine for this effect. Now as with glutamine 30-60% of arginine taken orally, is picked up the bodies organs first. This will vary from person to person as diet plays a key role in how deficient one might be. A good dose to start with would be 15-30g. That might sound like a lot, but we are trying to raise levels for a desirable effect. You have to take in enough for the organs to use first, and have enough left over for the anabolic process.
