Bodybuilding Question of the Month
by Sachet, Team Ironlife.com Staff Writer & Mod @ www.IntenseMuscle.com
“bbquestion"

This month's pumpin' iron question is unique in that I'll be contacting the people who responded to see if their predictions pan out in six months!

Since the actual information was taken at the end of October, I'll get back in contact with everyone in April, collect their responses and we'll see how they did in the May issue.

    - Deadlift
    - Squat
    - Bench
    - Leg Press
    - Straight bar curl
  • Out of the five, which do you predict you'll see the most improvement within 6 months?

    - Weight: 253
    - Years Training: 5

    - Deadlift - 665 lbs.
    - Squat - 585 lbs. x 4
    - Bench - 365 lbs. x 6, 405 lbs. x 2
    - Leg Press - I don't leg press
    - Straight bar curl - haven't maxed on these, but I can curl 155 lbs. for about 8 reps

Honestly, as a personal trainer I TRY to practice what I preach, so I've swallowed my ego and stuck with complete reps through a full range of motion and I've recognized better gains, FASTER as a result. Imagine that...doing things the RIGHT way works more efficiently...lol

I think my squat will improve the most. I'm not worried about a big bench press and deadlift progress is slow these days. I'm trying to put on more Hight, and I'm thinking that I'll do it via my legs so I'm trying to concentrate on those mores than anything else..........

    - Straight bar curl: I don't curl

    Vertical Jump.
I currently work with a ton of basketball players. As such I'm spending considerable more time working and learning vertical jump training. BTW, the NSCA did a study on which test at the NFL combines correlate with success in the NFL. They found ONLY ONE test with a positive correlation. Know what it was? Vertical Jump.

I hope I will see my squat growing and then my deadlift.

Probably going to be Deadlifts and Leg Press. I no longer do free bar squats or barbell bench presses so it’s going to be tough to beat those numbers…LOL

As you see, not being a powerlifter I have not spent my lifting career focusing on heavy singles etc….but my focus has been on a more ’powerbuilding’ or ‘powerbodybuilding’ approach…..LOL Whatever you want to call it.

I think I'll see the most improvement out of my squat. The first year and 2 months I didn't do any legs because I was only worried about upper body. Then I woke up about 4 months ago and started doing legs.

Since my recent life revolved around the World Deadlift Challenge in Orlando, I'll include the exercises that I used to help prepare for that event. Obviously, the 814 pull is my current PR even though I missed it by <1/2" according to the judges. It would have been a good gym lift. As soon as I convert the video, we'll get it posted here at chemical fitness and everyone can take a look at that lift.

I dropped squats altogether for preparation for that meet and instead used front squats. I singled 405 easily about 2 weeks out from the meet. On the 45* leg press, it was (26) 45's for 2 sets of 10 and 11 reps respectively.

As far as improvements go, I think I'll see the biggest improvement in curls since I'm recovering from a partially ruptured distal biceps tendon. It doesn't take much to improve from *0* LOL. (I have made it up to the 40's on db curls, so things are progressing better than expected).

    - Leg Press: 360 + the wt. of the press, whatever that was, four reps.
    - Straight bar curl: 85 (45#bar) lbs.

Hopefully, my DL and bar curl. Honestly, it's unfair to have to pick one that I want to improve the most because I want ALL of them to improve, of course. My weakest areas are my bench and curls. What's REALLY weird is, on the leg extension, I have to use no more than 30 lbs to get 15 2 sec contracted reps!

Go figure... I absolutely detest leg extensions!

I try not to focus overly on the amount of Hight I'm lifting as opposed to the quality of the work I'm doing with each rep. I think a lot of people put too much emphasis on the # and not enough on form and quality. If a Hight is to heavy to keep good form there's just no point imo, and you are only inviting a potential injury.

Well, apart from bench, I've never really tried to max out on any of my lifts. I don't have a spotter and don't really want to push myself with the chance of injury. Not too shabby for someone who couldn't even lift the bar at the end of 2001. At the moment I am just cruising along, not looking to add serious bulk until the new year so I am just lifting for 8-10 reps, nothing too heavy. Looking to improve a couple of muscles rather than Hights lifted, like biceps and quads.

For as long as I've trained, it's very rare I do less than five reps. I'm not worried about that and my only competition is with myself. I started training after reading a book by Dr. Franco Columbo and I was amazed at how powerful a man small in stature could be. Strong in mind and body, I still subscribe to his training methods. And I have always played sports but didn't start lifting until I was in my 20's. This is not my personal best but where I am now.

    - Bench: 165 lbs. x 1
    - Leg Press: 462 lbs. x 6
    - Straight bar curl: 70.5 lbs. x 8

Deadlifts and leg press - because I have not been doing them on a regular basis. I do believe they are awesome mass-builders, so for my next bulk period they will definitely be included in my program!

This definitely wasn't an easy question for people to respond to, but it will give all of them all a reason to challenge themselves a tad more for the next few months! Naturally, there will be skeptics making comments when you throw a number out there, but there are many more who will applaud your accomplishments.

Thank you to all of this month's participants and for your information, there's a no hiding rule in effect when I contact you in April *lmao!*

Special thanks to PRAETORIAN for allowing me to use his picture.

Till next month, stay safe~ ~lacey
