*Sportfight 7 Fright Night
by by Dagan Stafford, Team IronLife.com Staff Writer Photographs by Steve Richman
Matt "the Law" Lindland
Sportfight7 turned out to be an awesome night of fights. The event moved back inside the dome this time around. The ring was setup in the center of the dome with seating all around. Four projection screens were setup and ran a great mix of past Sportfight matches and intros on a number of fighters. The acoustics are really good in this place and the music was getting everyone worked up. There was alot of anticipation and excitement in the air. I saw very few empty seats, and this has been the case for the last few shows. Evidence that Portland has a good fan base for supporting MMA. UFC fighters Matt Lindland, Evan Tanner, Dennis Hallman, Joe Doerkson, and Benji Radach were all in attendance.

- Main Event - Ed "Short Fuse" Herman vs. Joe Doerksen (185 lbs)
What a great fight! Joe Doerksen entered the ring to some boos as the Portland crowd was strongly behind their hometown hero Ed Herman. Ed was unusually calm and focused for this bout. Joe looked composed and confident as the ref gave out the pre fight instructions. So much happened in this fight that a play by play would fill pages. Here are some highlights from each round.
Round 1 saw Ed Herman land a solid jab. Joe scored two takedowns early, but Herman worked back to his feet both times. Joe got Eds back and Herman stood up and bent at the waist. He reached over his head and grabbed Joes head with both hands. Then he did a diving forward roll spiking Joe's head into the ground. Amazingly Joe hung on and Ed had to fight off a rear naked choke that turned him red. The round ended with Herman connecting with some good shots in Joe's guard.
Round 2 began with Herman shooting in and scoring a big takedown on Joe. This round saw the best striking exchange of the bout as Ed stood up and connected with a beautiful flying knee. Joe shrugged it off and fired back with a nice kick to the head.
Round 3 started with Joe taking Ed down and landing in half guard. Ed was able to sweep Joe and ended up standing in Joe's guard. He landed some good elbows, but Joe locked a triangle on tight this time. Ed struggled to get out and went to sleep in the process. The kids got major heart and never tapped. Joe Doerksen takes this one via triangle choke in the 3rd round. Fantastic back and forth fight with a submission to unconsciousness.

- Co-Main Event - Dennis "Superman" Hallman vs. Landon "The Show" Showalter (185 lbs)
The story was told here by comparing the fighters records. Landon has 9 fights on his record. Dennis has over 60 with several UFC appearances. Dennis shot in and took Landon down easily. After a standup by the ref, Dennis scored another take down and went to work. He got top position, mount, and setup a triangle that Landon tapped to. Superman made it look easy. Matt Lindland teased him after the fight asking if he was afraid to trade strikes. Dennis laughed and said his Karate was too dangerous and they would not let him use it. He then joked that the mount kata he used to prepare worked out really well.
Later that night Dennis and Benji Radach foiled an armed robbery attempt at a restaurant called Elmers in Washington. The poor felon expected an easy score but ran into Dennis and Benji instead. He got his gun taken away, a broken jaw, and pinned painfully to the floor until the cops arrived. Nice job guys.

- Art "Pachuco" Santore vs. Justin "The Warrior" Davis (205 lbs)
These 2 guys traded shots in the opening exchange before clinching and going to the ground. It looked like Art's nose was broken, as it poured blood all over Justin Davis. The ref stopped the match and had Art checked out. After the doc gave the OK, the match was started again with Art in Justin's guard. One glancing shot to the nose and he was pouring blood again. All the while, Art is connecting with some solid ground n pound on Justin. Another ref stoppage to have both fighters checked out. Art had opened a cut on Justin. They stood in the same corner while the doctor attended to them both. Art gave Justin a friendly pat on the back that got a good laugh from the crowd. The action was restarted and Justin tapped due to strikes. This match scores the blood and gore needed for a Halloween bought.
Art bled heavily from the nose but scored the win via brutal ground n pound

- Lightweight Championship Match - Trevor Burnell vs. Dennis "The Piranha" Davis (155 lbs)
Super good fight. These guys had a ground war. Trevor managed to get Dennis's back a couple of time and Dennis fought out of it each time. Dennis administered some brutal shots from Trevor's guard. Just before the bell ending the second round, Dennis connected with a right that bounced Trevor's head off the canvas. He went to his corner visibly wobbled, but recovered well. Dennis locked in a guillotine mid way through the 3rd round. The ref called the fight saying Trevor tapped, but Trevor said he had not tapped. Dennis was very gracious about it saying they would watch the tape and he would give Trevor a rematch if he did not tap. In a controversial finish, Dennis Davis maintains the Lightweight belt.
Dennis landed some huge shots in Trevor's guard. This right connected and sounded like a gun shot.

- Dave Cochran vs. Cam "Mr. Smooth" Ward (160 lbs)
This fight was one of two designed to create a number one contender for Dennis Davis to face. Cam Ward looked really impressive in this fight. Taking the fight to the ground, he got Dave Cochran to roll over and give up his back. A rear naked choke followed and Cam walked away one step closer to a shot at the title.

- Paul"The Apostle" Morris vs. Chad "The Showstopper" Nelson (155 lbs)
Shortest fight of the night. Paul came out and threw a hard right. Chad slipped it and answered with a flying knee to the head. He followed Paul to the ground and finished him with a couple of light strikes before the ref called the fight. After 6 seconds, Chad got a KO victory that will match him up with Cam Ward. The winner of that fight gets a shot at Dennis Davis.
Amateur Fights
- Otis Petit vs. Adam Davis
Otis got this one via armbar in the 3rd round. Good battle between these two.
- Austin Ward vs. John Hooley
Only fight to go the distance. Judges ruled it a draw.
- Donovan Evan vs. Sebastian Rodriguez
Rodriguez got this when via TKO
- Eddie Blackburn vs. JD Stanley
Stanley gets a tap due to strikes in the 2nd round.
- JT Horner vs. Ian Loveland
Ian got a beautiful kneebar at the end of the 1st round getting a tap. Nice win.
Sportfight continues to impress. Sportfight 8 in January will have Matt "The Law" Lindland taking on JT "The Outlaw" Taylor. These 2 had a good verbal exchange in the ring with JT shoving Matt as he left the ring. Can't wait to see Matt fight in his own show. Overall, the show delivered the goods. Unreal night.
