Martial Arts Question of the Month
by Sachet, Team Ironlife.com Staff Writer, Mod @ www.IntenseMuscle.com

This column gives us all the chance to see a variety of responses to the same question from several different people. It's a great way to bring knowledgeable people from various sites together for educational purposes.

Between the people that responded to last month's question and those who replied to this month's question, I'm truly astounded at the level of athletes I've been coming across on these sites!

This month I asked:
  • Which Martial Art{s} do you practice?
  • During the past 6 months - year, which of your skills did you pay more attention to strengthening?
  • How did you go about it?

I'm kind of mixed.... working on getting into shoot fighting, or MT.. but my background is KB and Kung Fu.
Boxing... worked alot of it... and became better at it..
Now I focus on Strength and will do ground game or clinch after new years.. I have had a break of 6 months from MA cause I live a place I cant practice it..

My main martial arts focus as of right now is Brazilian Ju-Jitsu with a little bit of Muay Thai session here and there. Once I can free up more time, I will begin boxing along with Ju-Jitsu to help my stand up.
I still consider myself pretty new to BJJ so I don't really focus on any one area in my game. I'm working on all areas. If I had to choose one area I'm not progressing as well as others, it would definitely be my guard.
Sometimes instead of Grappling at a regular pace, my team mate and I will slow things down to work more on technique. When you go slower, you tend to 'see' things better and when you pick up on it, you can pick up the pace.

I am a Jiu-Jitsu and Muay-Thai practitioner. I've been practicing Ju-Jitsu close to 7yrs and Muay-Thai about 4. Aside from BJJ and MT I use my skills in MixedMartialArts (MMA). As years passed by, one thing that became clear to me in my fight game was my overall improvement. I just stopped getting better, I wasn't learning or applying anything new, therefore an opponent that would of studied my technique would of figured out ways to stop me without me having any way to counter effectively. What was done to change my stagnate performance level was simple, I changed everything about my training. I was training with the same people all the time and after a while none of us could really teach each other anything new. MMA is a sport that evolves constantly, because people are always trying to innovate new ways to attack or submit an opponent, and at the same time people are trying to find out ways to counter those same attacks and submission attempts. I began to train with different people, hired different trainers, and trained in different training facilities. I trained with people stronger than me, bigger than me, and better than me. I also kept my usual training partners with me who did the same as I did. In the end this ended up being the remedy for my lack of improvement in the fight game.

I train Brazilian Ju-Jitsu, with and with out the Gi..
My main focus right now is conditioning...I moved from sea level to @ 4000 ft and find that my endurance sucks! But as of late it seems to be getting back.
I have been training about 6 years, and while I need to learn more technique, I REALLY just need to remember the stuff I already know. So in the last 6 months I have been working on "combat conditioning" and remembering all the Ju-Jitsu I have forgotten!

    BJJ, Boxing, MMA training.
Overall MMA and BJJ w/ Gi (seems to be more technical training than w/o the Gi). Incorporated everything at once.

    Close Quarters Boxing (Clinch Boxing).
I tried to strengthen my pure boxing skills during the past year by going back to the basics. Starting with footwork, then tons of shadow boxing using tight form. I got away from Kicking and concentrated on just the boxing range. I kept in mind kicking defenses & anti-grappling, so I added those techniques into my shadow boxing.

I practice Brazilian jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, Muay Thai, and submission grappling. While ground techniques are my favorite, I recognize that to put them together to become a good MMA fighter, I have to be a rounded fighter. A year ago, I wanted to only focus on my weaknesses. Therefore, I first recognized a weakness, say kickboxing sparring for example, and then got my instructor and training partners to drill them incessantly with me until I'm satisfied. It's easy to forget little details even the very next class, so it was important for me to do class after class of sparring. Earlier this year when I was preparing for a fight in Japan against a girl I knew to be big on stand up, I went to one Brazilian jiu-jitsu class a week, and the rest of the time I did kickboxing.
Now, more recently, I've decided I want to tone the skills I am good at, like my submission techniques. So I asked my instructors to show me all types of variants on my favorite moves, plus escapes. Mindset is the biggest advantage to training for me. If I'm bound and determined to improve in one area, and I focus all my energy on that one thing, it will definitely improve.

Train as much as possible. Even when I am tired I go 100% effort. I've noticed a real difference in the last month but school prevents me from train as much as I would like. Overall I am pretty satisfied with how things are coming along.

I come from a wrestling background and I dabble in some boxing, kickboxing and BJJ.
I'm rebounding from an injury and other stuff. But I love to lift, so I am working on that to build my strength and I am getting back into the game.

I'd like to thank everyone who participated in this month's questions. Naturally, it's difficult to get a feel of what someone is all about simply by their response to a couple of questions. So I did what any other red blooded female would do.. I lurked and read some of your board posts.

    Til next month.. stay safe!
