- Ironlife: Mindi, you just recently competed at the Ms Fitness Olympia. Please tell us how that felt to compete with some of the best female athletes in the world.
Mindi: Hi Fyre! I was so excited and felt so honored to be given the opportunity to compete amongst the best fitness athletes in the world. The competitors are true hardcore athletes and they are only there for one reason..to win!! I felt right at home. These girls were all so nice and very helpful. I had a great time and I hope I can qualify next year.
- What was going through your mind when you heard them call your name onto the stage?
It's totally out of my character to be nervous. I usually am really focused and have my thoughts and feelings under control. For some strange reason, I was a little nervous before stepping on stage. I didn't really know what to expect and how the International judges would perceive my physique. I guess it was the fear of" the unknown" As soon as I stepped out on stage, I forgot all about my nervousness and just thought, "Wow!! I'm finally here...on the Olympia stage!" It was such a great experience and I definitely learned a lot this weekend.
- For those that didn't get to see the show, where did you place at the Olympia and how did you feel about your placing?
The Olympia was only my second Pro show, so I feel that I placed very well. I ended up placing 9th overall. My goal was to perform two solid fitness routines and have some good callouts for the physique comparisons. I accomplished both of my goals. I received a lot of positive feed back from the judges. They offered some advice on how to make some improvements for my next show. I will be making these improvements and will definitely be very competitive in my next pro show.
- Did they have a box of Krispy Kremes waiting for you backstage?
NO!!!
- Is there anything that you feel you will do differently for the next pro show?
There is always room for improvement. Dennis and I have already had numerous conversations regarding my workouts, nutrition, routines, hair, makeup, suit selection etc... We have already started putting a new action plan together and will start working on these changes at the beginning of next week. I am so pumped and eager to get started on making these changes and I can't wait for the next show.
- I know you're fresh off the biggest show of the year, but do you have any concrete plans on which shows you will do in the New Year?
I need to get my face out there and get the judges and fans to see who I am and let them know that I am a strong, determined competitor and i'm definitely here to stay. I am hoping to get an invite to the Arnold Classic. This show will take place the first weekend in March 2005.
- After doing such a big show and I'm sure the prep took a lot out of you, will you take some time off from training now or will you jump right back into it again?
I love to take on new challenges and I love to constantly make improvements on my physique. I know what I have to work on in order to break the top five at major competitions, so starting next week, I will be back in the gym full time and start working on what my weaknesses. I am so motivated and excited to take on a new challenge.
- The Fitness Olympia has the mandatory round in the black unitard. How did you feel that went for you?
My mandatory routine went really well. You need to be really creative when it comes to this round because you are only given 45 seconds to incorporate the five mandatory elements. In my routine, I had a few different skills than the rest of the competitors. Overall, I was happy with my performance. I also think that the 45 sec. routine should be incorporated at the Canadian Natioal level if not at the Provincial level so that the girls are more prepared for the Pro level.
- Were you the only Canadian female that competed in the Olympia this year?
I was the only Canadian fitness competitor competing at the Olympia. Other athletes that represented Canada were Elaine Goodlad (figure), Dayana Cadeau, Desiree Ellis, and Claude Groulx (bodybuilding).
- You certainly have done Canada proud Mindi. You only just won your pro card in July and you've already competed on the biggest stage in the world. How does that make you feel?
I feel very blessed and very lucky. I have had so much support from my family, friends, and sponsors to help me fulfill my dreams. It's amazing. I want to say thank you to my fiance` Dennis for supporting me, coaching me, and encouraging me on this journey, my son Alex for being so understanding and for being my cardio partner, Trent hinde, Doug Schneider and all the folks at Sportlab Nutrition for supplying me with the top supplements and support , Karen Phillips from KHP Designs
(khpdesigns.com) for supplying me with the most beautiful outfits , Karen by far makes the best competitive swimsuits and outfits on Canada , Shari and Kevin Hodges from Fabutan Tanning Studios, Kenny Smith from Wizards Hair Salon, Joanna Christophi from Salon Mirage Hair Salon and Jason Wiggins for helping with expenses. I feel so proud because..."I AM CANADIAN".
- Thank you so much Mindi, for taking the time out each month to spend time with Ironlife. We wish you all the best in all your future endeavours. Congratulations once again on your terrific performance at the Fitness Olympia.
Thank you very much Fyre. See you soon!
