Why I Love Combat Sports

There is no better sport in the world than mixed martial arts. MMA has evolved from pay-per-view novelty item to a legitimate sport in a decade. It is the quality of athletes as well as a very committed fan base that keeps the sport going.

“contest" MMA is unlike most professional sports because it isn’t tainted by money. In my mind it is a pure sport because it hasn’t reached mainstream status yet. Our athletes are training, fighting, sacrificing not for millions, but for a few thousand in the bank and for the love of the sport.

I have been watching MMA since it first premiered in North America over 10 years ago and I have been an addicted fan ever since. I was astounded how brutal some matches were and I was amazed how a small Brazilian by the name of Royce Gracie was able to stop brawlers intent on hammering his face and was able to make them tap out with a unique grappling style that I had never seen before. I have seen the sport evolve faster than anyone could have imagined, the blending of grappling, boxing, wrestling and kickboxing has made MMA the most exciting sport in the world to watch.

I love the fact that on any given night, a legend could fall and a new legend can be created. In the ring or in the cage is where months of sacrifice and months of training comes together. We are fortunate enough to see some of the most well conditioned athletes on the planet go head-to-head in the most challenging combat sport in the world. More often than not everything is laid out in the cage. I’ve seen men come back from hellacious beatings to overcome and win. I’ve seen fighters who were given no chance in hell to win pull off a victory only they knew they could achieve. The will to win is what our athletes have and it shows through to the crowds. That is why the sport has such a loyal fan following.

“contest" Professional sports is filled with egos and money, however in MMA you see true professionals, in the ring and with the fans. Fighters greet the fans like old time friends, with pictures, autographs, on internet forums and a few even give out phone numbers. This couldn’t be found anywhere else in professional sports. To watch two men compete in a full-contact combat sport for five rounds, bloody and beaten embrace after a war is the most humbling experience a person can have. To watch two men have respect for each other after fighting with all their hearts is why I love mixed martial arts. It is an honest sport, a true sport, a pure sport. There is no equal to it, bar none.
