Absolute Fighting Championship 10 Review
by Ben Stark, Team IronLife.com Staff Writer
On Saturday, October 30, 2004 at the War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The festivities started at 7:00 pm.
Fight 1 - Pat Healy vs. Dan Hardy
Hardy came in aggressive throwing blows and landing practically everything he threw but Pat weathered the storm and took Dan down with a BIG double leg. Dan worked his way back up to his feet but Pat held onto a wizard and put Hardy on his back with an inside trip. Pat worked to take the back and got warned for striking to the back of the head losing 1 point on the round and a stand up. This was the break Hardy needed. Unfortunately for him Pat came at him strong and took him down with a body lock knee trip. They scrambled with Pat catching a DEEP guillotine choke. Hardy tried to fight through it going for a single leg to get side but to no avail and tapped from the choke.
Pat “Pee Wee” Healy wins via guillotine choke in round 1.
Fight 2 - Petrus “Buffalo” Walker vs. Rob Smith
The bell rings and Buffalo runs Rob to the corner they clinch and exchange knees. Buffalo goes for an inside leg trip take down but Smith countered and landed on top. Smith stood up, backed out and waved Buffalo up. This (Buffalo just came off a KO victory and is feeling solid with his stand up) Buffalo stood up and came in with a strong flurry rocking Smith and setting him back to the ropes. Buffalo ran him into the corner again and after a min ended up on his back again. Buffalo worked from ½ guard as Smith threw shots to the stomach. Buffalo goes for kneebar, sweeps Smith and in a scramble is put back down. Bell rings and the round ends.
Round 2 begins much the same way rd1 did in the corner with Smith getting a take down and sitting in Buffalo’s guard. Buffalo works for a kimura, after Smith thwarts that attempt Walker eats some leather but catches an omplata and goes for a toe hold (ala Mir vs. Tank) Smith is in some danger and begins to kick Buffalo in the face (receiving a warning) and escapes. And gets back to Buffalo’s guard and backs out again and stands up. Buffalo gets a body lock and drives back to the corner. Smith goes for the take down this time ending up on the bottom himself Buffalo letting loose a flurry of punches for the remainder of the round landing most of them.
Upon the decision it is ruled a majority draw.
Fight 3 - Carol Prater vs. Efrain Ruiz
Prater took Ruiz down early and pounded from the guard after a min or 2 they were stood up with Prater getting warned for elbows. Prater took Efrain down again with a body lock leg trip and continued to bring the pain with out slowing at all for the rest of the round.
Round 2 started with both fighters trading kicks. You could see the difference in intensity & skill between the two of them with Prater in the lead big time. Ruiz body locks and Prater throws high knees to the head & jacking Ruiz in the face with his shoulder. Prater driving Ruiz into the ropes and getting the take down taunts Ruiz and dives into his guard throwing BOMBS to his body & head Prater finishes the round strong.
Prater wins a unanimous decision
Fight 4 - Raphiel Diaz vs. Bryan Medlin
Diaz came into this fight a big underdog with only having a 1-0 record to Medlin’s 6-0. Unfortunately for Medlin his experience didn’t show through in his performance after taking Diaz down Medlin got armbared in 1:16 of the first round.
Raphiel Diaz wins via armbar in round 1.
Fight 5 - Charles McCarthy vs. Keith Rockel
This is probably the biggest fight on McCarthy’s career taking on the UFC vet Rockel. McCarthy ate a right hand off the bat but just taunted Rockel like it didn’t phase him in the least and they started to exchange again. Rockel went for a takedown and McCarthy went for the back. They stale mated after a scramble and Charles went for a rolling kneebar, stood up and SLAMMED Rockel hard, passed his guard & grabbed for a kimura. Rockel escaped so Charles pounded on him for a bit before Rockel got back to his feet. Rockel took McCarthy down. McCarthy grabs for an unorthodox armbar and transfers to a toe hold & takes top. McCarthy starts working a slow GnP game sticking his tongue out to the press and waiting for them to take pics. McCarthy goes for Kimura again but gets rolled. He continues to go for leg locks for the remainder, taking a few shots and gives his back for the last 10 seconds of the round.
Round 2 started with Rockel getting top and dropping leather. McCarthy takes some shots and gives his back. Rockel gets a Rear Naked Choke and McCarthy seemed to go out but since they were falling out of the ring they were reset in the center which was just the break McCarthy needed to turn things around. Soon after the reset McCarthy escaped & armbared Rockel for the W.
McCarthy wins via armbar in round 2.
Fight 6 - Renato Tavares vs. Mike Brown
This was a fight that a lot of people were waiting for and could have been the fight of the night but with all well matched fights there can either be fire works or not much of anything. Unfortunately there was a minimal amount of fire works in this fight though still a solid showing by both competitors.
The fight started of with a small trade between the fighters and Renato goes to his guard. Brown back out and they exchange again, Renato goes back to his guard and the fight slows dramatically with Renato working for a reverse armbar. They were stood up due to inactivity. Back standing they body clinch and Renato goes to his guard again and immediately to sweep but like the first two tried to no avail. The round ends without much else happening.
Round 2 starts with Renato shooting and getting a body lock on Brown and driving him to the corner. Brown breaks the clinch they exchange blows Renato shoots Brown sprawls out and grabs a guillotine, Tavares jumps over to side mount but gets caught up in the ropes and rolled to his back (Had Renato achieved side mount I personally believe there would have been a very different outcome to the fight). Renato works from ½ guard bottom. Brown being very inactive with Renato trying to sweep and coming extremely close but to no avail. Brown back out for the stand up & the round ends. Renato has a very visible mouse on his right eye.
Round 3 starts off much like the first with Renato going to guard again, no sweep and a back out by Brown. Renato and Brown over under clinch and go to the corner exchanging knees Renato takes a shot in the nuts. They stop for like 30 seconds and get back to it. Brown shoots Renato sprawls, another over/under clinch and back to the corner exchanging knees. Brown gets the take down into Renato’s guard and they both flurry till the bell rang.
Brown wins via unanimous decision.
Fight 7 - Hermes Franca vs. Manny Reyes Jr.
This fight was set up for a single 10 min round no judges win only by KO or submission. Both fighters came out stalking with Manny throwing a leg kick to everyone’s surprise. Hermes soon after clinches gets a leg sweep take down into a knee on stomach ½ guard kind of position and throws hammer fists to Manny’s mouth KO-ing him. Hermes didn’t even perspire. After the paramedics woke up Manny he was complaining of his teeth being loose.
Hermes Franca by KO in round 1.
Thus ending an overall good night of fights.
