“mtg" In my time as a Muay Thai and Kickboxing student, I've trained at a fair few clubs and have had the opportunity to train with some awesome fighters including Darren Balshow and Winston Frazier Of Diablo Gym, Jamie Knox of Melton Assassins and also great names such as Anuwat Kaewsamrit and Donnie Blake in Thailand. Out of all the poeple i've trained with, One stands out from amongst the great fighters. A fighter who's passion and dedication to his sport is second to none but it's not this attribute in him that makes stand out for me. Whilst there are many fighters who excell with their amount of dedication to the sport, Barinder makes a positive diffference to not only his fellow team mates and students he teaches, but to the community at large and proves to be a great role model for everyone who he happens to meet.

Barinder has truly proved that there's light at the end of the tunnel by channeling the negativity in his life into positive energy and focussing that in his Kickboxing training. Barinder, or Killer Bee as he's known in the ring (Bee to his friends), exemplifies the spirit of sportsmanship and dedication and that fulfilling your dreams is possible.

“mtg" Barinder is fresh from having recently beaten Steve Swinburne to aquire the English Pro Full Contact Title under WAKO PRO by stopping steve in the second round, Bee's 5th win by way of stoppage on a roll... The man is simply on fire and as he prepares himself to fight in an international prestige fight in Ireland this month as well as prepare for the UK's First 8 man 64kg Full Contact Elimination event, I had a chance to catch up with the busy man to ask him a few questions...
Ironlife/Muay Thai Guy: Hey there, Bee! How Are you?
Barinder: I'm alright bro, How about you?
Ironlife/Muay Thai Guy: Not bad thanks. OK so let's get this interview on the road... So what got you started?
Barinder: I started at the age of 10 at Leicester Kickboxing Club. I had 2 older cousins who used to fight for the club. I went to see them do a demonstration at a fair in abbey park. I enjoyed watching so I gave it a go for about a year then I packed it in for a about 4 years. But in between the 4 years I trained at a couple of boxing gyms that my uncle used to take me to, nothing to serious. I then came back into kickboxing at the age of 14, I joined a beginners course with my uncle. Since then my life has turned around big time.
Ironlife/Muay Thai Guy: You've just won an English Title for Full Contact Kickboxing. Please give a run down of the fight and how do you feel and what's next for you?
Barinder: I beat Steve swinburne for the title at light welterweight. I felt that the first round did not go my way even though I kept going forward he was just to slippery for me. Round 2 was different as I picked my shots a bit more and landed a left hook which took him down, but for some reason he wasn’t counted! He then got back up on his feet and I dropped him with a right hand. I think he could of carried on but he just lost heart.
Ironlife/Muay Thai Guy: Yes, I remember fighting Steve myself and he gave me a very tough fight too... So what have been your hardest and easiest fights?
Barinder: The hardest fight I ever fought was against Suky Shoria from Trever Specors gym. He was tough, it was a toe to toe fight I won the fight on points.

The easiest fight I ever fought was for the WAKO PRO Super Welterweight Midlands Area Title Against Dale Morris earlier this year. I took the fight with 4 days notice I had not trained properly for a bout a month before that fight but I sailed through with out a scratch and stopped him at the end of the second round.

Funny enough the hardest fights have all been the ones I have won and the ones that I lost were just me having a bad day! But I have learned to make my days good! As I have no plans of losing again in the future but hey if I do lose its just part of the experience!

Ironlife/Muay Thai Guy: You're fighting again this month aren't you?
Barinder: Yes, My next fight will be in Ireland. I don’t know anything about my opponent but I am well looking forward to this one as it is my first fight abroad!
Ironlife/Muay Thai Guy: You also will be involved in a full contact 64kg 8 man tournament, how are you going to train for that and how do you feel about being involved in such a tournament format?
Barinder: I will be doing a lot of sparring for this event with as many different fighters as possible as I could possibly be up against 3 different fighters with 3 different styles in one night! I am really looking forward to this event as I have never done any thing like this before. Win loose or draw I’m going to go out there to enjoy myself! I do feel that I have a good chance of winning this tournament because I always want to win. Some fighters loose heart when things don’t go there way in the first couple of rounds. I think my heart will get me threw this one.
Ironlife/Muay Thai Guy: So, What's an average day look like for Barinder Singh?
Barinder: An average day for me would be getting up to start work at South Leicestershire College at 8:30am. I’m a learning mentor. Basically it means I’m a professional friend for the students. I really enjoy the job and feel that I can relate to most of the students day to day living as I was not so perfect in my early teen years. A few of the students I deal with are into the smoking weed seen and out robbing and causing trouble, and they're the ones I enjoy working with most as I was one of them back in the day. I think it is important for young adults to have a role model. I think if I never started up kickboxing I would have ended up in prison, I think youth need something positive to do in there lives and a helpful guiding hand to get them trough. I think my Mentor has been my trainer Jag. If it weren’t for him and his gym who knows where I’d be today!
Ironlife/Muay Thai Guy: Thanks Bee, I hope you all the best for the future and for the 8 man event and the fight in Ireland!
