Another Front
by Bachir Ayoub, Team IronLife.com Staff Writer
A recurring theme in most articles you’ll read about MMA is the still ongoing fight to receive legitimacy from the mainstream. With the UFC reality show still on the horizon and no real national TV contract, the sport needs all the help in get in any form. I personally have a soft spot/addiction for its best tool in my opinion, the highlights that are made by talented fans. I have converted more people into fans of the sport by showing them a couple of the best videos that I have in my collection than showing them a DVD from various events. The videos have gotten more exposure and vastly better since their early days.
As powerful a tool as HL videos are, they are also a powerful expression of the passion the fans have the sport. You can view the Highlight video and drool over the brutal slams or vicious knockouts and be satisfied. With certain highlights videos that have recently emerged they don’t just showcase a fighter’s skills, but they tend to tell a story. They may begin with and interview segment showcasing a fighters’ personality or a training montage that show the brutal preparation that is involved with being a pro.
Each highlight video maker brings a certain style that makes it his own. The current video make that has very quickly become one of my favorites is Hero1. Not to play favorites but the build up to the action mixed with a sophisticated cinematographic skill that he seems to be able to put into a ten minute time frame. The boys over at Sherdog have been able to move away from the traditional template that has been closely associated with the standard highlight video, which is intense music mixed with clips from different fights. It appears that each highlight video has a hand in the innovation of the popular forum for MMA fans.
I realize that I have singled out two highlight video makers but I have to sing the praises of all highlight videos. For all the time, effort and passion that you put into the making of highlights videos; I have to simply say on behalf of all fans out there, thank you. Thank you for showcasing your skills and showcasing the best sport on the planet right now. In conclusion, keep up the good work and more importantly keep the videos coming.
