In the September issue of the Ironlife Online Magazine, SuperSport educated us on the topic of Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation. I asked him why he discusses UBI on bodybuilding boards since bodybuilding isn't exactly a healthy sport.

A portion of SuperSport's reply was, 'As for my posting of therapies such as UBI on the boards, I think most bodybuilders are more prone to infections which is something UBI clears very quickly-usually within a day. I am also aware that with the rigorous dieting and conditioning there is certainly some immune suppression involved as many BB'ers and athletes get sick right after a show or event-and again UBI will restore immune function immediately.'

When SuperSport offered to carry his camera into his physician's office at his next UBI appointment, naturally I was surprised at first and almost didn't believe he would go through the trouble. But, obviously he's a man of his word because here's the pictures. Naturally, I have a couple of questions too

- Sachet: Are you required to fast or do you need to restrict your fluid intake for a certain amount of time before the UBI proceedure? Are there any other restrictions asked of a person prior to having this treatment?
SuperSport: This is a great question, as I forgot to point this out. The only thing that seems to nullify the effect of UBI is sulfur. A patient is advised to avoid sulfer based medications or foods such as cabbage, onions, broccoli, etc, that contain sulfer. When UBI was first discovered the practitioners noted that the patients on sulfer based medications were not responding to UBI...but after a day of not using those medications the treatment was effective.

There is no fasting or water restriction that is advised. Actually, being well hydrated is very beneficial as the blood will flow through the tubing alot better. Sometimes I am a little dehydrated at the beginning of the treatment as I have to drive for 2 hours to get to the clinic. Sometimes I will not bring any water with me and will be a little parched at the beginning of the treatment. What is really amazing is that within a minute of drinking the water my blood gets significantly thinner and flows much better. It is very, very noticeable.

- What reaction from the staff did you get when you whipped out your camera to take pictures?
LOL. Well, the nurse was the only one of the staff that was with me, and he did comment that nobody had ever done that before. He probably thinks I am a little strange now or something, lol.

- Could you describe what transpired the day of your scheduled appointment?
I woke up early to hit the gym before getting on the road to the office. The MD that I see for UBI is about 2 hours away, and I usually like to schedule my appointments early so I can have the rest of the day off to visit friends in that area.

I arrived at the office at 9:15 for my 9:30 appointment. I was the first IV "stick" of the day for the nurse. I am an easy stick by the nurses as I have "good veins", lol.

My blood pressure and pulse rate were taken by the nurse. Both were normal-blood pressure was 105/58. Not bad for dealing with rush hour traffic in Raleigh, I suppose, lol.

So then I sat in the chair where the UBI technique is employed. Next to me was the UBI machine, which is actually a "photo luminescent" device, meaning that it gives off Ultraviolet rays. This device is pictured in photo number one. There are many of these devices and ones similar on the market. This particular one is from Germany and is called the "Eumatron". My understanding is that this is the most popular UBI device. The "cuvette" is the plastic tubing that is sitting inside the machine. It is clear and has been prepped with heparin which is a drug that prevents the blood from coagulating. The tubing is about 3 feet long, and in the middle of the tubing there is a small section-about 10 inches long-that is made out of quartz glass. This is the part of the tubing that sits in the machine. Quartz glass is used because the UVC rays will penetrate it fully.

Photo number 2 is of the quartz glass section of the tubing that rests inside the photo luminescent device. It is hard to tell, but in the inside of the glass tubing is a solid quartz glass rod that serves as a baffle. This baffle speeds the blood thin for maximum exposure to the UVC rays. The viewer can see that the top of the machine is open and the UVC lamp sits inside of it, just out of sight. This is where the blood will ultimately be exposed to the UVC rays.

Photo number 3 is of my right arm with the IV rig inserted and the blood is flowing. The nurse begins the proceedure by sticking the needle in an arm or hand vein and is taped down for stability.

Photo number 4 shows the blood in the cuvette going from my arm to the photo luminescent device. The blood flows fairly slowly, probably 1 inch every 2 seconds or so.

Photo number 5 shows the other end of the cuvette with the 60cc syringe in the nurse's hands. He will pull back on the plunger when the syringe is empty which will draw the blood through the tubing. After this syringe fills with blood, he will push on the plunger thus returning the blood back through the photoluminescence device where the blood is exposed for the second time, and ends up going back into the patient. The size of the patient determines how much blood will be irradiated with UVC rays. The most that is irradiated is 180 cc's. I weigh 230 pounds, so I get the full 180 cc's irradiated. Someone that weighs 120 pounds would get approximately 100 CC's irradiated. So the nurse made three whole passes with my blood in this particular treatment.

After all of my blood was returned to me, the IV was removed and a band aid was attached, and I was finished with the treatment.

The treatment takes all of 10 to 15 minutes and is not painful at all. After the treatment the patient does not really feel anything at all unless they are suffering some type of sickness. The first time I had UBI performed I was sick with the flu. About an hour after the treatment I had some severe chills for about 10 minutes or so and fever. These are symptoms of the immune system running effectively and that is where UBI shines brightest-it enhances and modulates the immune system and organizes it to destroy any and all pathogens no matter if they are viral, bacterial, fungal, or cancerous cells. Our immune system is a million times stronger and more effective than any drug or pill when it is stimulated properly by methods such as UBI. This is why it "cures" so many aliments, infectious or not. It is effective in virtually everything from asthma to cancer to arthritis to AIDS.

- How did you feel after having the procedure? Did you notice any significant improvements in any fashion?
The only time I ever actually felt anything was when I had my first treatment done when I was sick with the flu. Since that time I have used it as a preventative as it enhances the immune status for months after use. Since my first treatment I have alleviated all of my allergies, experienced the disappearance of warts, and an improvement in my eyesight to perfect with colors being so much more vivid. I have not had a cold or even a sniffle in almost 5 years since my first treatment. I usually have UBI performed 3-4 times per year.

However, I have witnessed a man that made a significant improvement that suffered from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. COPD is where mucous and puss try to block the respiratory passages and the patient's lips will sometimes turn blue from the lack of oxygen. During the middle of the UBI procedure this man's lips turned a pink color, and afterwards he told the secretary that he had not felt that good in 5 years. The results can be that quick for many patients.

- Are there any restrictions put upon you after having UBI performed?
Not really. Just avoiding sulfur based foods and medications for the rest of the day is all that I am aware of.

A national list of participating UBI physicans can be found by clicking this link:

- I'd like to extend a grrreat big thank you to SuperSport for going out of his way to provide photos of his UBI treatment. It's fascinating.. to say the least.
