All over the world, we see images that portrait a “truth” about anabolic steroids which more often than not, is very far off the scientific reality. Therefore, and in order to clarify some of these myths, I will take the next series of articles to shed some light on some of the controversies that I hear about on a constant matter.
I had to start somewhere, so here is myth # 1:
1. Steroids kill people.
This myth has been going around for quite some time now. It is indeed the reason given by lawmakers to keep them illegal. In fact, the population has been lead to believe that an athlete using anabolic steroids is as much of a drug user as that using crack, or similar substances.
Let’s see some facts… Each year, you can count with the fingers of one of your hands the amount of people who die because of using anabolic steroids. In addition, those who die, die from ABUSING steroids, not from using. And having said that, it is easier to get ill because of abusing Tylenol than because of abusing Anavar (a famous anabolic steroid).
So, why are anabolic steroids illegal in the US? Because there was a time when the teenager population using anabolic steroids started growing, as well as the number of competitive athletes doing so. Therefore, to protect the youth, as well as to “maintain the integrity of sports”, these were classified as Schedule III drugs, which makes them controlled substances illegal without a prescription.
But how much people do they really kill? From regular conscious use, I haven’t heard of a single case. From ABUSING them, few cases in the last 10 years. Compared to tobacco products (440,000 Americans each year, 1,200
Americans each day), without counting those who die from second hand smoke (50,000 a year), anabolic steroids “death toll” is so small that wouldn’t even make it to the chart. The truth is that at this time, the main reason for anabolic steroids to remain illegal is to please a conservative side of the American population who bought the media stories, as well as to protect the actions taken in the past. If the US government was really trying to protect our youth, I would say cigarettes and tobacco products are a way better start than steroids…
But that’s just me…
If you have a particular myth that would like us to address, please send an e-mail to: mailto:mm@mmrfitness.com with “AAS Myth” as the subject, and we’ll do our best to include it on the list…
