Rosalie Berghuis Interview
- Muay Thai Guy: Hi there Rosalie, You've made yourself as a top female athlete and defied a lot of conventions on women and combat sports. How did you get started in training and in Fighting?
Rosalie Berghuis: Hi Fahad, I started at 14 years old actually playing around in a Thai gym in Pattaya on a Holiday. When I came back in Holland I met Guy Paret from the HTK Team and saw immediately the energy the man has. Guy is a fantastic guy , he always try to help people out and is very honest, a thing that is not always the case with many people. He's always there for me even now when we are so far away from each other. We have a very good relationship and when I have a fight we call or e-mail each other, he keeps reminding me that I have to keep my guard up, lol . Also my parents are very important as they always there for me no mater what. My new trainer now is also my boyfriend so let's say he's there to help me out 24 hours a day, lol. staan altijd achter me!
- How do you feel about the way women's Muay Thai is at the moment and how do you see it in the future?
The girls are doing great lately, don't you think, technically it's getting there. Before it was a brawl and people did not watch the fight for the right reasons, now people come to watch certain girls and follow them around where they fight, that's nice.
- Who has been your toughest opponent to date?
Debby Broeders from Holland, pff, that was hard for me, we where both exhausted after the fight. Because of Debby I realized I needed to work on my clinching technique. Actually Debby was the girl to give me a wake up call. Since fighting her I worked so hard and that's been paying of in fights I have know. I respect her a lot but it would be nice to have a rematch with Debby I am sure it would be a hell of a fight again but it would be nice to have a go again and maybe win this one.. So promoters in Europe, make me happy, lol.
- Tell us more about your recent victory in the Queens Cup in Thailand.
It was so nice to fight for so many people. Even when I was taping approx 100 people was watching me and wanted to get closer. The day of the fight I had to loose a bit of weight but I was ok. This fight was a rematch, Kwompa is a good fighter and it was up to me to be at my best. I felt great entering the ring and the power was there to. The two first rounds went as planned, round 3 she tried to come back in the fight but in round 4 she was counted and the fight was mine. I was very happy to win this rematch and have a fantastic crowd behind me.
- What has been your greatest accomplishment in Sport?
For me it's to see the Thai people get behind you in a fight as a foreigner. It's a great feeling. It's keep me doing the things I do..
- So what does your training schedule look like? How does this change when you fight?
I'm in the gym 6 days a week, if I have a fight coming up 7 days a week. If I don't have a fight I do some skipping rope and bag work for approx. 2 hours. If I have a fight coming up I do 15 min skipping rope, 15 min shadow boxing, 6-7 rounds of 5 min. on the Thai pads, 30 min. Clinching and a few rounds on the bag, sit-ups, push-ups, iron bar pull ups enough to make it to 3-4 hours. Also every morning at 07.00 I am on the road with my boyfriend running 6-7 km..
- Wow, That's a pretty intensive routine you have there! No wonder you are so successful! What are your ambitions for the future?
Being N°1 but I think everybody wants that!! Also I started a gym here in Pattaya and it's getting busier every week. So hopefully it will in time become a good school with top fighters!!
- Who would u love to fight?
To be honest I would not know that. Here in Thailand I beat every good girl in my category but I hear there are a lot of good girls in NZ, Australia and Japan, so would like to have a challenge there if I can. If I go back to Europe I would like to fight in England and Holland, there the girls are really good so I would like to see where I stand.
- So with such intensive training, what do you like to do when you're not training and fighting?
Well actually I am always in the gym. I like to talk to the guys and girls in the gym; I assure you it's not always about Thai boxing. I try to visit a lot of Thai events to learn some new tricks. Only on Sunday its beach times for me, going to movies or have fun relaxing in a disco.
