Mindi O'Brien Interview
IronLife/Fyre: - Mindi O'Brien is Canada's newest pro in Fitness. Mindi took the time out of her busy schedule to do an interview with me. First off Mindi, I just want to say thank you for taking the time to do this interview with me.

Mindi O'Brien: No problem…thank you!

- I want to congratulate you on your latest win at the Canadian Fitness and Figure Championships on July 3rd. How are you feeling about that win Mindi?
Thank you. I am so happy to have finally earned my pro card and feel honored to be able to represent Canada on the Pro circuit. I am so eager and excited to compete on the pro circuit and compete amongst the best fitness athletes in the world.

Okay, so for those who are new to the fitness industry, how long have you been competing for?
My first fitness show was in 1996. It took place in the middle of a shopping mall. I really didn’t know what I was doing. I just thought that since I had a gymnastics background, I would be able to pull it off. I placed 2nd. After that show I was addicted. I did some research and found the CBBF. I knew I needed to change my physique-put on some more muscle, and work on my symmetry if I wanted to do well with this federation. I came back in 1999 and competed at the Ontario Naturals with a totally different package and ended up winning. I have competed every year since…so I guess its been 6 years I have been competing consistently

Typically, how long does it take you to prep for a show?
I stay in shape all year round. My weight only fluctuates 5-7 lbs (usually around Christmas!!) The least amount of time to get ready for a show was 3 days. Normally I give myself at least 4-6 weeks to be stage ready

- Outside of competing, what takes up most of your time?
Outside of competing my business takes up most of my time. My eleven year old son, Alex, my fiancé` and I own a private personal training studio. We have many figure and fitness athletes along with personal fitness goal clients that we are currently training. So when I’m not training myself, I’m focusing on our athletes and clients. My family is also very important to me, so I make sure I take extra time to spend quality time with them.

- Now that you have turned Pro, what are you goals for competing this year ?
My goals for competing this year as a new pro: SW Pro Cup in Dallas Texas on August 6&7th. I would love to get an invite to the Arnold Classic. I’m taking this year and use it as a learning experience and getting my name and face out there.

- Is there anybody that you can say has been a true role model for you in climbing the fitness ladder?
My role model and biggest supporter has been my fiancé` Dennis Beitler. He has been there since the beginning. He has been my trainer and training partner, my chef, my motivator and my emotional supporter (poor guy!) He is amazing!!!

- What do you think of the new Figure class as opposed to Fitness and is that a route that you might take in the future?
Having spent my entire life as a competitive athlete in many different sports, to personally satisfy “ the athlete” within, I feel I need some kind of athletic challenge along with the body/symmetry building. Therefore, if competitive fitness routines became something my body could no longer do, I would probably find something else such as obstacle courses, triathlons, fitness and strength challenges, etc…) to satisfy the “competitor” within me. I’m more of a “fitness athlete” rather than fitness model.

- What's your favorite part of competing?
My favorite part of competing is the training before hand. I love putting a plan together and seeing it through to the end. I love watching the body transform, setting new goals and learning about myself along the journey. My favorite part of the competition is performing my routine on stage.

- How about your least favorite:
My least favorite thing about competing or preparing for shows is cardio. I really don’t like it.

- Do you have any advice for ladies looking to compete in fitness?
The advise that I can give to ladies looking to compete in fitness are: -check out different shows(where and what federation do you think you belong), speak with competitors, educate yourself, do lots of research, ask lots of questions, check out cost??? Competing is very expensive (traveling, dieting, supplements, outfits, tanning, tanning product, makeup, nails, hair, show entry fees, etc…) get a trainer/nutritionist.

- Thank you once again Mindi for taking the time out to talk to me. I look forward to seeing you compete as a Pro. All the best in your future endeavours
