Gladiator Challenge "Battle Over the Bridge "
by GUNG HO

GC on Saturday 7/10/04 had 13 out of its scheduled 15 fights due to fighter dropouts at the last minute.

“gladiator" In the first match of the night, heavyweight TC Collins from Dave Terrells' school sunk in a guillatine choke on Tony Porthill from Santa Rosa CA half a minute into the first round.

Franco Burcina fighting out of Terrells' school was defeated in the second round by Team Bohlanders' Todd Mittendorf. Franco couldn't take Mittendorf down, and wasn't setting up his attacks or takedown attempts. In the end he basically covered up against the fence while Mittendorf rained down a 10 second flurry of strikes to his head.

Billy Sanders was defeated by Mike Carrillo with a rear naked choke half a minute into the first round.

5'10" 160lb Chad Myers from Ukiah lost a decision to Jacob Hardgrove from Santa Rosa fighting out of David Terrells Nor-Cal Fighting Alliance. By far the most brutal match of the night, Myers was quickly taken down and mounted, GnP'd and managed to maneuver out of an attempted armbar. Hardgrove was sinking in a deep sidechoke when the bell sounded signaling the end of Round 1. During the break, it's very obvious how hard of a beating Myers had already received from the brutal GnP the previous round. Round 2 started off the exact same way as the first, with Hardgrove scoring a clean takedown, passing into the mount, and dropping numerous elbow, forearm and hammerfist strikes to Myers head after attempting a keylock and another armbar. The fight ended in a decision and Myers was carried out of the ring on a stretcher. Even with the severe loss to Hardgrove, Myers showed incredible heart and perseverance throughout the match.

In the next match, Kenny Kingsford was suplexed by Drew Martin in the first round then gave his back, after which Drew attempted a rear naked then moved to guard. Cecil stood them up after a few seconds and both traded some good blows with Kenny landing solid hands and knees before the bell. The second round played out with both fighters trading blows, yet much slower this time around. By the end of the round, both fighters were completely exhausted and Kingsford won the decision to the dissatisfaction of the crowd.

The following match opened with George Lopez deflected a high hook kick by Kelly Johnson, moved through a hard straight and clenched. After securing arm position Lopez jumped guard and won by guillotine choke in 14 seconds.

Steve Barnett and James Fanshier clashed hard in the first round of the next fight with solid kicks and a clinch against the cage. Ref Herb Dean restarts the two in the center of the ring, where Fanshier deters Barnetts takedown attempt with a solid knee to the forhead, opening up a deep cut above Barnetts left eye. Doctor stoppage ends the fight less than 3 minutes into the first round.

The next fight was for the Native American Heavyweight Championship title and featured Ruben “Warpath” Villarreal defending his title against Nick Jake. Ruben completely outstruck Jake and ended it with two brutal hammerfists after Jake fell to the ground in the first.

Possibly the most entertaining fights of the night had Mike McGregor and Kevin King in a slugfest that went into the second round. King gassed out within about 40 seconds into the first round, dropping his hands, leaning forward and resting with his hands on his legs similar to Tank Abbott in his later days. After some solid exchanges, King was dropped in the second round by a right hook landing on the chin from McGregor.

Following the Championship match was Jeff Cox taking on Ethiopian Thomas Agee which riled up the crowd more than any fight of the night. Agee came in very aggressively and slipped on the mat, with Cox gaining sidemount and throwing down GnP until ref stoppage a minute into the first round.

The light heavyweight bout had Mike Diaz raining blows and knees on Randall Lamond for the ref stoppage.

The next match had welterweight Mario Ackerberg being taken down repeatedly by Matt McPherson. Ackerberg defended off McPhersons GnP and submission attempts and gained mount in the first, dropping bombs with his elbows until ref stoppage.

“gladiator" Bo Cantrell faced Julius Askew in the main event. These two heavyweights came right at each other when the bell rang with a flurry of punches with Bo Cantrell ending the exchange with a solid clench against the cage, where he worked some hard foot stomps on Askew and landed numerous knees to his thighs and midsection. Cantrell was able to sink in the guillotine choke and ended the fight about a minute into the first.

Couture was there to meet the fans and as always, took some time to talk with as many people as he could. Overall, it was an incredible event.
