My Experiences of Training in Thailand...
Again aka Return to the Holy Land aka Kaewsamrit Gym Review

“training"

It was a spur of the moment thing, Life was somewhat getting on top of me and whilst in a job which I don’t particularly like anymore, something came to mind… I need to get one step closer to pursuing my somewhat overly ambitious dream of making it big as a fighter… and there’s only one place I know that that was going to happen. So I decided that it was time for me to again book a plane ticket to the holy land and make the pilgrimage to train at a gym in Thailand!

After a coincidental series of private messages sent between me and BKK Rob, a member on Ironlife who also happened to be a liaison at the Kaewsamrit Gym in Thailand, I decided that that is where I would go. I had trained at Lanna before but I wanted to try out a hardcore gym, a Bangkok gym, a gym where serious fighters trained and after reading a little about the gym, I realized that its pedigree was what I was looking for. After all, not every gym in Thailand can boast a stable of about 25 Thais, most of whom who fight at Rachadamnern and Lumpinee level!

“training" I didn’t have to think twice about going and I am pretty sure it came to a surprise to Bkk Rob to hear that I was on my way… I kind of surprised myself too but I knew this is what I needed to do.

When I arrived in Thailand, The Kaewsamrit gym, recently voted gym of the year in Thailand, was going through a transition phase. They were moving from their old residence, up the road to a newer more modern establishment that still had improvements and building works being made to it by the time I had left.

Upon first glance of the gym, I knew I was in a serious training environment and watching the others immediately proved to me that there was to be no messing about here. It wasn’t a holiday camp, this was breeding ground of champions, of some of the finest fighters in Thailand and this suited me just fine as I was there not to party, not to holiday and not to mess about!

The training schedule was your standard Thai training regiment. Morning training started at roughly 6am. It would start of with a run. Once you returned to camp you would shadow box, hit pads, hit the heavy bag, clinch, spar and then warm down with callisthenic exercises.

“training" The afternoon Session would follow a similar pattern to the morning training session however; it would generally start with skipping and a run to cool down after training. The pad work would be more intense in the afternoon as opposed to morning.

Not only was Kaewsamrit a serious camp, another thing that stood out was the people at the camp. The trainers were friendly and were more than happy to teach you and show you new technique. Something some gyms in Thailand are infamous for not doing. Also the camp owner and his wife were extremely hospitable and would literally go out of their way in order to make the foreign trainees feel welcome.

Not only are the people at the camp great, the food was amazing too. Included in the cost of training are two meals, more than substantial and absolutely delicious! The fee also includes accommodation in dormitory style rooms above the training facility. The rooms were safe and clean although whilst I was there the rooms were being done up but they plan to have fridges in each room soon.

“training" The fee for training was 1,000 baht per day however, a discount is available if you stay for over a certain period of time. Although this puts it on the higher end in terms of costs as Thai gyms are concerned, there are more expensive gyms out there and not all the other gyms boast great trainers and the fact that you train with some of the best fighters in Thailand.

I was fortunate to be able to train with the likes of Wacharachai Kaewsamrit and the current Thailand number 1 fighter, Anuwat Kaewsamrit who took time out of his training for his big fight against Singdam Kiatmu9 to help me with my technique and to spar with me!

Originally I was only intending on staying in Thailand for 1 month however, I decided to extend my trip by another 3 weeks as I felt that if I really wanted to make an improvement in myself, I would need to train at the gym for a longer period of time than I had originally planned for. Admittedly, my first few weeks of training were tougher than I had expected. The standard at the camp was high, this didn’t mean that it was unsuitable for anyone of any level, eager to train, to come and learn, it was more of a case that I wanted to get the most out of my training there and in the first few weeks. it felt as though everything I was doing was wrong. Once I had settled down though it was much better.

The camp is situated in the Talingchan district of Bangkok. It is on the outskirts so to speak so it is a quieter area. Although this meant there was little to do in the direct area, it did mean that you could focus on your training and it was not too far from a cinema complex and a mall, which were only a taxi ride away.

In conclusion, If you’re after a serious gym to train at whilst in Thailand. One where you will be given great tuition and amongst good people then Kaewsamrit is worth checking out. As stated previously, the price is on the upper end where Thai gyms are concerned but to reiterate, you get excellent instruction, the chance to train with great fighters, good accommodation and of course GREAT FOOD!!!

If however, you’re after a gym where you want to party and mess around, then I personally ask you not to go to Kaewsamrit and ruin its reputation as a fine gym.

Kaewsamrit will have a website up and running soon. If you would like further information on the gym and the training or would like to be kept up to date with the website and general Kaewsamrit information then please get in touch with BKK Rob or myself.

Special thanks to Rob Cox (bkk rob) for the pictures.
