It was anticipated as the fight of the year in Thailand, The ever electric atmosphere of the Lumpini stadium in Bangkok was to be the venue for one of the most talked about fights of the year so far. The name on everyone’s lips, Anuwat Kaewsamrit.
Fresh from his victory at the Omnoi stadium where he was crowned Isuzu Challenge champion and Omnoy stadium champion. Anuwat was to face his nemesis in the guise of Singdam Kiatmuu9, The then number one fighter in Thailand. The importance of this fight was to determine the new number one. “fight" In their previous encounter, Anuwat (below) defeated Singdam with his awesome hands to KO Singdam in the third round. Anuwat’s boxing skills have somewhat become his trademark quality although he can kick with the best of them too.
Overwhelmed by the atmosphere in the Lumpini, I witnessed two of the greatest fighters in Muay Thai at the moment make their entrances to the coveted ring. Both fighters began with the traditional Wai Kru, the ceremonial dance the boxers perform prior to a fight which is a way for them to show respect to their camp, trainers and family as well as having religious significances.
The first round started off with both fighters measuring each other up, which is the typical affair in Thai fights in Thailand however, it was noticeable from the onset that the pace was somewhat more ferocious than your average fight. Both of these fighters knew what was at stake and there was somewhat of a grudge between them seeing as Singdam had a score to settle and Anuwat was the underdog. The fighter’s styles contrasted and it was clear to see which fighter was the stronger with the hands and legs. Singdam delivering scathing kicks to Anuwat, who retaliated with punishing body shots. “fight" Singdam (at left) seemed to do more damage in the clinch. Especially in the second round but Anuwat kept rocking Singdam with punches, on occasion catching Singdam with crushing hooks.
The third round started with full gusto on behalf of Anuwat who unleashed a fury of punches as Singdam was pinned up against the ropes. Singdam tried with desperation to brush off Anuwat with hard kicks but found that tying Anuwat up in the clinch was his only option to avoid a KO there and then.
Singdam carried on executing his solid kicks but they failed to disturb Anuwat who stood strong and blocked them with ease. If Anuwat wasn’t blocking the kicks, he was rolling out of the way, evading any punishment then all of a sudden, Singdam delivers a head kick, Anuwat evades and counters with a solid right cross right on the chin of Singdam and it’s over!!! Lights out!!!
Singdam had been defeated again in the same fashion as he was in the two combatant’s previous encounter. The similar scene of a stretcher running into the ring to carry Singdam out was being replayed. It must have felt like Dejavu for all in attendance at the Lumpini that evening. Anuwat and his fans were ecstatic!!! Anuwat’s performance on the night was enough to earn him the accolade of Thailand Sports Writer’s Fighter of the year, which he can add to his already impressive curriculum Vitae of achievements in the sport.
All in all the fight was probably the best Muay Thai fight I have ever seen and to be present at The Lumpini stadium, the Mecca of Muay Thai fights, as well as having witnessing the fight of the year, was simply overwhelming.
It will be interesting to see who Anuwat will face in the coming months and a career in international boxing looks possible now.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the best to Anuwat Kaewsamrit and to thank the Kaewsamrit team, Rob Cox (BKK Rob) and Julio (Contender).
Until next time Keep your guard up! Chok Dee!

After fight

“fight"

Some Ugly Bastard with Anuwat:
