Interview With A Top Amateur Bodybuilder

by Superman1975

BB InterviewLet me preface this by stating that I will not divulge the man’s name that gave this interview at any request. Throughout my travels on sites like this I have come to know and trust a few guys. We have shared real names and have discussed things outside the realm of anabolics and bodybuilding. We are all very lucky to be reading this information because this is a look at the real world of competitive bodybuilding. I have edited some of the information given for content and grammar.

What does a typical day consist of for you?
Are you talking about off-season?

Sure, but is there really a difference?
There is a huge difference but lets just stick to off-season prep and I will talk about contest time later. I am up by 7am, and have my first meal usually a protein shake and some carbohydrates to prep for my first insulin shot and of course the mandatory ECA combo to help me through the day. Next, I am off to the gym for my workout. Unlike what you read in the magazines most of us don’t split our training up. I rush home to take my insulin shot and eat again, more carbs and lots more protein. Eggs, sausage, chicken; it all depends on my mood and the current cash situation. Food is the biggest expense I have, hell its most guys biggest expense. Now back to the gym to really work, depending on the day I will train 4-5 people and squeeze in as many meals as I can, usually protein bars and shakes. Around 3pm I head home to take my second insulin shot of the day and have my first balanced meal of the day. Usually consisting of a fibrous carb and a steak, chicken breast or fish fillet. Keep in mind it all depends on what is on sale. Then the rest of the day is left to eating and resting. I am usually in bed by 9-10pm and then start the cycle all over again.

Being that the world doesn’t just give things to people, how do you make a living by being a personal trainer/gym employee?
Thankfully I have a live-in girlfriend who helps with the bills and is very supportive of me and my dreams. I work at my gym and have to dabble in the underground part of this lifestyle. You know what I’m talking about so don’t play dumb. Most of us have to do it to make it through the month, I’m not doing it because I want to, and I do it because I have to. The expenses of this are too great to do it without out a sponsor, which I am working on, or without selling to the local gym rats.

Give me a typical stack for you.
What do you mean typical stack? Like dose and stuff? Testosterone is always on the menu, dose varies by the funds I have available. Just like everyone else I have to adjust my cycles to the money and time constraints I have. I have just been blessed with good genetics. I bet everyone says that but it is oddly true about the top guys. We don’t have to take the mega doses that everyone thinks we do to see the results of a guy taking 75mg of dbol every day, 2gs of test a week, 200mg of fina every day, 800mg of equipoise a week, and the list goes on for some guys. My cycles are fairly moderate by most standards. Some test, deca and an oral the only difference is that I use more insulin then most guys to add size. When contest time comes is when the cycle gets crazy for me and fairly expensive. Growth Hormone is added and the testosterone becomes a short acting kind to help control water retention. And I will stack more orals come contest time, for instance I have recently started trying anadrol, halotestin and winstrol all in the same day. But the anadrol dose is only 25mg the halo dose 20mg and the winny dose 50mg. I have added the anadrol to help with vascularity and hardness and it seems to be working. I try to drink as much water as possible and try to protect my liver as best as I can.

Are there any regrets you have about your lifestyle?
I worry about my health with the stuff I take. Most of us are not educated enough nor do we have the health insurance coverage to make what we choose to do a smart option. I am lucky to have a great doctor, with whom I trust a great deal and have the luxury of health insurance.

What’s the hardest part about competitive bodybuilding?
Finding the money to actually be able to compete at the level of the other guys. It takes so much money to be able to come in at your best I don’t know how some of the guys are able to do it. When we are all backstage the talk does turn to pre-contest cycle choice and the price of the stuff that some of these guys take is like buying a new car every year. It’s just nuts in my mind.

Do you think that the judging in at shows is fair?
For the most part yes, but there is a very rare occasion that you will see an amateur show judged poorly. The odds of seeing unfairness at a show is more on the pro level then at the amateur level.

What do you mean by that?
It is more likely to see an odd judgment call at a pro show, not usually in the top slot but more in the 2 and 3 slots. You will see guys that come in to a show in pretty bad shape place high enough to qualify for the Olympia that had no business placing the way they did. And that is complete bullshit just because of who they are and how many fans they bring to the show.

Who do you think will win the O this year?
Not really sure, with all the guys that have been dropping out of the scene lately its hard to tell. I wouldn’t be surprised if an up-and-comer pulls an upset this year just to breath some new life into that show.

Who is an amateur to watch for in the future?
ME!! Just kidding. Wow this is a tough one; there are a lot of guys out there to watch so I can’t narrow it down. But one thing is for sure there is a changing of the guard coming soon. The top names of today will be no-bodies in a few years.

Well that’s all I can think of asking you unless you have something else to add.
Nothing more here I hope this helps you out.
It did thanks a bunch.
